Re: Safari 3 "Inspect Element"— this is cool.
Probably just going to be there during the beta period, as that's a feature of the WebKit nightlies.

hmm, i didn't have to follow the steps in your blog post. Maybe it shows up automatically when you have the debug menu turned on?

I've had that forever. (pre beta3)
If you are not already, you should have the debug mode on, and if you are really cool you should be using the WebDevExtensions. (though sadly they don't work in Beta 3). That extension is the reason I have never needed FF+Firebug.

The inspector is part of the engine; the nightlies are just the latest engine plus Safari chrome. So we should be seeing the inspector in the final release of Safari 3, though it might need to be enabled via some preference.

Re: Safari 3 "Inspect Element"— this is cool.
I'd wager that the inspector is only attached to the nightlies, and won't be a part of any official releases (aside from the beta). I mean, it's been in there for a while, and hasn't yet been rolled into a Safari release yet. At best, we may see it hidden in the debug menu, but I wouldn't put money on that personally. Though I'm probably wrong.
Anyway, came in here to say that the inspector has been updated! The new one is hawt, and really gives Firebug a run for its money for me. Now if it would add live edit capabilities, and if I could figure out how the hell Drosera is supposed to work, I'd be all set.

As far as I can tell, I don't think anything has been rolled into a Safari 2.0.x release that didn't fix a crashing bug. There's a bug with document.importNode that was fixed in WebKit the same month that the inspector was introduced (almost a year and a half ago), and the bug is still in Safari 2.
It'd be nice if they were a little more proactive about backporting bugs to the released version of Safari... but at this point I just hope that they release Safari 3 for Tiger (unlike Safari 2, which was never released for 10.3 or earlier).

Re: Safari 3 "Inspect Element"— this is cool.
I've got some visual glitches with the new inspector, but that's about it.
These are both with it "docked" to the bottom of the screen:
If I use my scroll wheel in a scrollable space the entire area will sroll left and right while the selected area properly scrolls up and down.
If you're inspecting an element and create a new tab the "shading" that it applies to isolate the element goes bonkers and not only covers your new tab but extrudes outside the main browser window.
Other than that - its damn handy!
