Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

Considering that my Mac is running 24/7 with Folding@Home, I thought that I could host a webpage made from iWeb. Three problems:
1. I am running inside a home network wit a router with (I believe) a static IP adress, how do I set it up, and:
2. How do i get a domainname such as FuturDreamz.com? or is it OK to just use an ISP address? and, most important:
3. How do I set up my Mac to do this?

Re: Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

You are not getting a static IP from your ISP unless you are specifically paying for it.  As far as a domain name goes, you just need to buy one and then tell them your IP number and possible some DNS info from your ISP.

You will need to turn on the DMZ feature of your router, directing the ports used for web hosting (Apache) and maybe FTP depending on your goals to point to the IP number of the box that will serve up the web site.  It is all fairly easy.  If your ISP owns your router, I doubt it has the feature.

Although the client version of OS X can run a website, you would be much better running it from a "real" server OS.  Best bet is Apache as the actual server software; which is indeed what OS X uses.

How often does a recursive IP address change?
Just wondering because I used IceClean to locate my public IP, and it hasn't changed since i started monitoring yesterday.

System Preferences > Sharing > Turn on Personal Web Sharing.

"Recursive IP"?  Depending on your service provider, even if you have a dynamic IP, it may change infrequently, especially if your computer (or router) is always on.

Re: Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

When you turn on web sharing it tells you the URL right there in the prefs pane.

When you visit that address, IIRC, you'll get a page that tells you where you need to put files.

Re: Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

Probably because there's at least one firewall between us and his computer that isn't  permitting incoming traffic on port 80.

Re: Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

If you have web sharing turned on in the system preferences, it'll automatically open the port in your computer's firewall.  Plus, the number after the colon is the port number—that's not HTTP traffic being blocked.

If you can get to the site from within your network, using the WAN IP, than the problem is most likely that your ISP doesn't allow HTTP servers on port 80.  This is pretty common.

Re: Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

But the xx.xx.xx.xx are unfamiliar IPs that I changed to xx.xx.xx.xx. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to post them.
So, based on my lacklustre understanding, Stealth Mode was the cause of the problem.

FutureDreamz, I am honestly not sure if you are aware that this exists.  A large portion of the questions you asked in this thread could have been answered very quickly through a self-help trip to Mac Help or Google.

The only good that turning off stealth mode will do is reduce the security of your computer.

On a computer, on my network, using the iMac's IP and my home network IP I get to the site.

The problem is most likely that your ISP doesn't allow HTTP servers on port 80.

Try running this command in the Terminal:

Code:

sudo sed -i.sed -e 's/^Port 80$/Port 8765/' /etc/httpd/httpd.conf && sudo apachectl graceful

Open up TCP port 8765 in your computer's firewall, and forward it from the router to the server.

Re: Hosting webpage on my Mac: Help!

Well it works with the new port, looks like that got around your firewall.
