Damn...getting slow in my old age.

Epic is getting close to Blizzard in terms of Mac support. Really just about every game they've released had a Mac version.

Ryan Gordon must be getting even less sleep than usual.

OK, prime the pumps to torture Kirk with reloading, and Icks into getting it. wink

Edit: UB or x86-only?

I would wager that support for the G5 will get canned in favor of an x86 only port.

Moreover, I wouldn't be surprised if this was another Cider job.

This is me being contemplative, but since the 360 has a processor similar to PowerPC, wouldn't a G5 port be technically easier?

Not necessarily.  The 360 still uses DirectX, the Mac does not.

I'm going to guess UB, G5 and newer, no Cider.
Any word on if the PC version will support network play with 360 (and PS3 on the UT3 side)?

Sounds cool, hopefully they will be UB.

It's more Endian issues. DirectX etc. are OS issues, and there is a port, so... Mac game ports have been working around the DX issues for the last dozen years. The 360 PPC is also in-order execution and whatnot, but there are these things called compilers. They're found even outside of Marathon. smile

No PC-360 cross-platform GoW play, don't know about others. Your guesses sound ballpark to me.

Oh wow. This is definitely good news.

Hmm...  If this Dual 1.8 G5 supports GoW..  Dunno whether buying a better graphics card or just an Xbox 360 would be better.

Re: Gears of War for Mac!

Just getting a 360 is easier and almost cheaper, depending on which one you get.

Re: Gears of War for Mac!

Honestly, you'd probably need a NVidia 6800, 7800, or Radeon X800 to get decent performance and the shader support necessary. Ultimately, it depends on how much backwards compatibility they allow with the graphics settings, though.

Part of it will be deciding which ppl you most want to play with/against (and remember GoW has co-op Campaign; GoW PC has the extra MP maps, editor and mini-campaign including a Brumak fight (shots 2 & 8); also proper m/kb controls. wink

If it's gonna be UB, that would basically mean that they'd be making a version for the subset of G5 tower owners who have an X800 or 6800.  That's a pretty small market, so they're either going to have to offer lower graphics modes, or make it Intel-only (I hope they take the former path).

Anyway, this is excellent news, and it's great to see the Mac game market starting to show some signs of life.

Ah yes, just saw the "extra 5 chapters" thing on the Game Head video.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I do wonder if Epic would release a future downloads thing to bring the extra PC-only content onto the 360.

Haven't played Gears at all, so you probably know better than me, but I thought the stop-cover-and-aim method for GoW was well-suited for dual-analogs?

Aiming/looking is always better with a mouse.

Re: Gears of War for Mac!

Ya sure, but for Gears of War, by how much would it be better? For an all-out FPS, mouse and keyboard would win hands down. But I thought GoW had a different gameplay mechanic than first-person shooters.

Yeah, it does. You don't normally run around freely shooting, you hop from fixed views behind cover.

I'm guessing this won't run on my Powerbook G4 though cry

That and, quite honestly, there will be a hell of a lot more games available for a new console then a Mac with an architecture that's going the way of the Dodo.

Re: Gears of War for Mac!

I guess it's cool that Gears is coming out for PC, but until they tell us how the controls are going to work, I'm going to be skeptical. It was modeled after Resident Evil 4, and then designed specifically for the 360, after all.

It may have had Resident Evil 4 aspects, but dude, this is Epic Games. They're currently making Unreal Tournament 3 for goodness' sake.
