iPod cyclical redundancy check/Parameter Incorrect error on large file
I’ve started getting errors on some large files (seemingly random) that I copy to my 5.5G 40GB iPod. (They’re .tivo files from my Tivo so I can watch shows on another computer, and my iPod is FAT32 used only with Windows.)
The files will copy without error, but then when I try to copy them off the iPod, on one system I’ll get a “cyclical redundancy check” error, and on another in the same spot with the same file I’ll get “Cannot copy <name of file>: The parameter is incorrect.
It seems to be happening just recently, and randomly. Maybe I’ll copy 8 shows over, and only one will give me that error.
When I get the error, the iPod’s disk activity indicator will have stopped spinning. It’s like it’s quit trying to transfer anything. I’ll get errors for a short while after that if I try to access anything on disc, but then it’s like the iPod wakes up again, the disc spins back up, and my computer can access files again.
I’ve restored my iPod recently, and run a basic check on the disk using Windows’ built-in disk utility.
Any other ideas what’s going wrong? Nothing’s changed about my systems since this started yesterday.

Re: iPod cyclical redundancy check/Parameter Incorrect error on large file
Well, I tossed the old iPod, and get occasional similar errors on my 5.5G iPod. It's got some bad sectors on it, though I imagine that's not as dire as if a "big" hard drive had visible errors, as I assume the iPod's drive dosen't have the same level of error correction.

Are these files over 4 GB in size? FAT32 cannot handle files any larger than that.

No, way under 4GB, and the failure always comes when trying to read it back from the iPod (I'm assuming at this point it must be hitting bad sectors or something, versus an interface problem...maybe).

You might try DiskWarrior on it. Make sure to turn off automatic starting for iTunes when your iPod gets connected otherwise DiskWarrior won't be able to access the iPod's drive.

Thanks, but I don't have Diskwarrior. I mostly use this on Windows (formatted FAT32).
I have run chkdsk on it, which turns up bad sectors. Hopefully it'll keep holding out. I think I'm done with hard drive based portable devices after this though!

Ack, sorry--missed the part on yours being formatted FAT32.
In that case you might get SpinRite and use that to test the iPod's drive for bad sectors and such. It is a good emergency utility to have to check/repair hard drives formatted for Windows.
