Extracting 5.1 Audio

This is a little odd (maybe) so stick with me here. I've purchased a DVD-Album which has some video documentary content as well as 5.1 Audio tracks of the songs that were on the Retail CD, which were obviously only Stereo at that point.

My car stereo supports DVD-A format, so I'm trying to extract the audio from the purchased DVD, then re-burn it to play in the awesomeness of the surround sound stereo.

I have managed, through several PeeCee apps, to extract an AC3 file, then convert that to one huge WAV (about 2 GB) and confirmed through Audacity that it's still in 5.1, but writing it to either a DVD or CD using Nero reduces it back to 2-channel stereo.

Is there a way, on either platform, to do this? confused

For extracting I've done that before with MacTheRipper, you might also try Handbrake.

As for burning 5.1 audio - you might have to find a specialized application for that, maybe even a "pro" application.

Just a thought, but by chance can you pull that into iMovie and then burn 5.1 audio from iDVD or something like that? If I recall they both support 5.1 audio, but I don't know if there's any way you can just burn the audio portion of a movie.

Re: Extracting 5.1 Audio

Interesting ideas, I'll try it on the MacBook. The extracting part seems to be fine (if somewhat convoluted) it's just the burning that's got me stumped. Thz Gip, you're full of ideas!

@zoees: I looked at all of the info I could Toast, but don't see anything explicit that says it will encode 5.1 while burning. Good start though.

Yeah- I just looked through all of the preferences for Toast and I didn't see anything. But you know it may be just one of those things that you do and it just works.
