Pearl Jam's Anti-Bush Lyrics Censored by AT&T
The rock band Pearl Jam is upset after lyrics critical of President Bush were censored out of a live webcast of Lollapalooza last weekend by AT&T. The telecom company has apologized and said that the editing of the lyrics was a mistake that should not have happened.
How come this kind of stuff repeatedly surfaces with this administration in power? Is this a coincidence or something bigger? People being banned from bush media events b/c of their bumper stickers or political leanings, and so on.
Freedom is on the march!

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

AT&T's central office on Folsom Street in San Francisco houses a secret room that allows the National Security Agency to monitor phone and internet traffic, according to former AT&T technician-cum-whistle-blower Mark Klein.
AT&T provided National Security Agency eavesdroppers with full access to its customers' phone calls, and shunted its customers' internet traffic to data-mining equipment installed in a secret room in its San Francisco switching center, according to a former AT&T worker cooperating in the Electronic Frontier Foundation's lawsuit against the company.
...
I haven't seen Mr. Klein listed as a witness for Leahy, or Rockefeller's whitewashers, either.

...Fans have claimed AT&T has a history of editing performers on AT&T's Blue Room live webcasts. An AT&T spokeswoman has stated: “It's not our intent to edit political comments in webcasts on the attblueroom.com. Unfortunately, it has happened in the past in a handful of cases. We have taken steps to ensure that it won't happen again.”
The statement did not give any details about how the editing process would be changed or what performers have been edited in the past.
...
I'd advise getting used to this. Soon enough, we'll never know about it any more.

Why is it that conservatives seem to have no problem with this sort of liberty supression, yet when the market is supervised they have a smurf fit crying freedom foul.

Looks like AT&T has censored bands political rants many times prior to this.

...and for the next 72 hours, the same gregorian chant will be replayed continuously interrupted briefly, every 5 minutes with 8 minutes of advertisements for "the new at&t", cars, and oil companies.

another "it's bush's fault" excuse.
as we all know, bush is president and ceo for at&t.
a little unknown fact about freedom of speech. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press."
government cannot make laws prohibiting free speech or what people/companies can/cannot say - but if you start a company and you want your company to have/not have a particular message sent out - that's your right.
but yes...it's bush's fault, of course.

Um you do realize he clearly said, administration, not Bush, right?

It's like, we went through this already in... what, 1984? I'm too young to remember. And granted it's not really the old guard AT&T and it's actually mostly SBC Global making up this new at&t, but it still is starting to smack of the same unregulated abuses.
This is why folks like Ted Stevens needs to be tossed in jail. Our government should've been watching for this and preventing the re-merging of the Baby Bells, and instead they're in the pockets of these corporate interests and are absolutely raping everyone else.

You do understand that AT&T probably wouldn't have even been allowed to exist without the Bush Administration's FCC, right?

Re: Pearl Jam's Anti-Bush Lyrics Censored by AT&T
What exactly is the reason to "break up" AT & T ?
Anti-trust laws are there to deal with monopolies, not large companies.
AT & T has several competitors in the phone business, in addition to the fact that the "phone business" has nothing CLOSE to a monopoly on modern communication.

Because monopolizing is irrelevant if their competition refuses to compete in any price wars and instead stays at 50/50 retention. AT&T and Verizon in their buying sprees are heading directly towards this, in cellular, in data, in landline, in anything telecommunications.
