Ah, yes ... I well remember writing that cover line.  We were having quite a debate among the editorial staff, some saying that the iPod was a dog 'cause it had only 5GB of capacity, no EQ, and execrable earbuds, and others saying that although it was, indeed, pretty %$#@ing expensive for its capabilities and capacity compared to the competition of the day, it was a great leap forward in simplicity and usability -- so I hedged our opinion on the cover. 

As the wise ol' native American would say in the hoary ol' movie cliche, "Many moons have passed..."
