Mac Life Sucks
I bought my first and last issue of the new rag a couple of weeks ago. It was the connect your mac to anything issue. One product they mentioned was Trendnet's TV-IP400W web cam. I thought it looked good so I went and purchased one. It is not mac compatible. I can never trust the reviews in this magazine again. MacAddict would have never done that.

Could you explain how it wasn't Mac compatible?

I'm going to laugh if this guy didn't actually read the article. Because the way it's worded it's sounding like he didn't.

WOW , so you read the Mag article , you have trouble , then instead of asking for help you call the the Magazine Trash. Gee that seems sort of short sighted.

Re: Mac Life Sucks
Bob,
I understand your frustration and I agree it is not the same mag
.
I never understand why people bother to waste their time posting and not offer any help (Supergoo). I will try not to be one of those. You didn't say what the trouble was but let me suggest one thing. Plug the camera into your computer's ethernet port and make sure you are not connected to any other networks ie WiFi. Then follow the directions and connect to the camera with your browser @ http://192.160.0.20
That's all I got.
BTW, if you read the article it says "Remote access involves a few intricate steps and may even require a call to tech support for help" (sic), not the most Mac inspired set up.
I am surprised MacLife didn't put up a walk through for mac users on the web site.

Re: Mac Life Sucks
um where?
If you are referring to the link http://www.maclife.com/article/connect_ … i_network, mentioned by Digital Droo, it's helpful advice for setting up the camera is to call tech support.

No, their helpful advice is:
To get started, first connect the TV-IP400W to your home network using an Ethernet cable - this is just a temporary connection to help you configure the device and select your wireless network. Launch your Web browser, type 192.168.0.20 in the address bar, press Return, and click the Java link to view and control video. To configure the wireless network name, click System Administration, then Wireless, and then select your network name from the pop-up menu. Remote access involves a few intricate steps and may even require a call to tech support for help, but it’s worth it.
Which is pretty much all you should have to do. Details should be in the documentation you get when you buy the product. Indeed, more details would be silly to add, since the manufacturer might revise their product, in which case MacLife's guide would be either incorrect, or potentially harmful.
Also notable is that when you bought the camera, you didn't make your check out to MacLife, and they are in no way responsible for supporting the product.
As an aside, when a tech magazine written by a bunch of nerds says they had to call tech support (or hints at it) in order to get a product working, that's as close as they usually come to saying "STAY AWAY!! DO NOT BUY!!" I think endorsing the product in the first place was a mistake - not only for that reason, but also because the manufacturer doesn't offer Mac OS support. That kind of thing is acceptable in a "hack your mac" article with the appropriate disclaimers, but that's it.

And let's just add, for the record, it's not a product review.

Only problem is that Apple in its infinite wisdom decided to cancel the iSight. So what is they point in showing how to setup one if you can't buy one.

Re: Mac Life Sucks
Considering you could buy a cheap miniDV cam for about $50 more than an isight, it's really not that big of a bummer that Apple canceled it. Granted, there's definately a place for a firewire webcam, but I could never justify spending $129 or of $149 or whatever it originally cost for one.

Re: Mac Life Sucks
Wow, who knew. I came back to see if anyone posted about this non-mac camera and saw my post got a bunch of comments.
I still think the mag sucks. Sorry if that bothers people. Do not promote non mac stuff. It is not a mac compatible product. A mac oriented mag should not promote it. Fine it's not a product review. You can plug your mac into a grapefruit and get vitamin C (you might need to eat a multi vitamin but its worth it). Don't get pissed at me if it doesn't work.
Thank you for telling what it says in the camera's directions about connecting with 192.168.0.20.
For the record, I can connect to the camera over ethernet (thanks Leaky) I can not connect to the camera using java.
Hey John Brandon please tell me how you connected to the camera.
PS
One bright spot- I thought my post would been deleted because I said something negative about such an obvious shill rag. Grats to the forum moderator for having guts.

There are two kinds of negative posts. Those which offer the opportunity for some constructive conversation, and those which don't. That's "wut."

Re: Mac Life Sucks
I too bought this Trendnet camera by reviewing this article in Maclife. The poster is correct, java will not work with this camera on a mac. I downloaded other software to check the camera and it works, but is not camera specific so no pan and tilt and only 320 resolution.
Mac life indeed has got a problem with an illegitimate editorial on this product. It could not have been tested by the author. The unfortunate outcome of all this is that Trendnet is now using this article as a promotion and even has it posted under "news" on their website. The tech department over at Trendnet knows nothing about the endorsement and continues to say they do NOT support Mac.
I have tried three different browsers and several versions of Java to correct the issue to no avail. The camera works fine on my PC (although not the quality it professes to be) and is not defective.
Shame on you John Brandon for presenting a device you never really tested. Shame on you Trendnet for not supporting the Mac platform at all, and then believing Brandon's article, without testing yourself.
My camera is going back.

John Brandon posted another howto. I remembered some people complained about it. Maybe you guys can post comments below the articles just in case John Brandon doesn't surf these forums.
