WoW no more
reader beware, this is a highly opinionated (and possibly whiny) post
After 4 years, three 70s, and 2 other 60+ characters, I finally canceled my world of warcraft subscription. It was actually a surprisingly easy decision. The beginning of the end started when they first changed the pvp system. As an honor grinder used to having to get 100,000 honor or more a week just to get blues, a new system that gave hwl gear away like candy horrified me. But, like most others who were on the honor grind with me, I soon placated myself knowing that BC gear would replace that "unearned" gear.
Although there were many other things that were beginning to make me tired of wow (such as friends leaving the game, sudden influx of ppl who apparently had no idea what they were doing, etc.) the final nail in the coffin for me was the arena system. When it had first come out I had envisioned a system where only the top percentile of people would be allowed to purchase gear (much like the old honor system i had reveled in). But whats this? Teams with 1400 and lower ratings have some better gear than my warlock who is in one of the top raiding guilds on the server? But thats preposterous! You're trying to tell me that any team, no matter how terrible they are, can get the best gear in the game (and by best i mean the season 2 gear was on par with SSC loot when it was released) simply by sucking for a long enough time?
I've always been a believer in merit based achievements. Guilds dont down bosses by dicking around in instances, they do it by bringing people who know their class and want to work through progression. Similarly, i thought blizz would bring that same aspect to their arena system but alas, i was sadly mistaken. Of course I always knew wow was the biggest carebear mmo ever but...I'd hadn't expected that.
/end of childish whining. I know there are still 8 million other people who enjoy playing wow, and blizzard can enjoy their monthly income of $120 million or whatever it is.
tl;dr wow sucks play warhammer when it comes out
...but hey, what do I know

Re: WoW no more
I think you have a valid set of concerns to some extent. But seriously.. why care what gear other people have? Play for your own enjoyment.
And, to be blunt, with the success of WoW, other companies will do MORE of what WoW does, rather than less.
If there is a decent way to play Warhammer with out reinstalling XP... I'll be in. I also want to try Age of Conan when it comes out.
From what I can tell, either way, you're screwed. Bad people are punished by society's laws, and good people are punished by Murphy's Law.

Re: WoW no more
age of conan looks good too.
The problem is that blizzard had an enormous budget to play with due to their past successes (as well as a solid fan base), so after playing wow a lot of other mmo's just seem terrible in comparison.

Re: WoW no more
I've noticed that. I was on the beta for LotRO. It looked ok, but everything was so static... and the quests were just as pointless and annoying... not a lot really grabbed me, other than walking into Rivendell.
From what I've read of Age of Conan, the character system looks novel and fun... and so I will at least give it a shot. I'd try to get on the beta, but I just dont have space on my MBP hard drive to install Winderz at the moment. When my student loans come in, I think I will get the local shop to pop in a 200gig drive

I agree, though remember Blizzard is in this to make money. The monthly gem payments when one gets to at least friendly with the Consortium reminds me of a kick back.
If enough of the kids whine about something being too difficult, it'll be made easier. Gotta keep the monthly subscription fees coming in. At some point however it'll get too lop sided and enough people will leave the game they might shift things back the other way.

Re: WoW no more
The new honor system and arena system aren't perfect, but they're a hell of a lot better than the old honor system.
You just had to play for absolutely unhealthy amounts of time, or share your account, to get the best PvP gear on competitive servers, it had nothing to do with how good you were.

Yeah, I'd have to say don't blame the game for you quitting. Just say you didn't enjoy it anymore. Not like you have to justify yourself. And yes, I don't play wow anymore.

Re: WoW no more
Let me get this straight, one of the main you reasons you played WoW was so that your gear could be better than everyone else's?
It takes the 1400 rated teams a lot longer to get the gear than the 2300 rated ones. And as for the new system giving away gear like candy, maybe the fact that you had to play 14 hours a day to get epics in the old system distorts your opinions. It still takes a lot of hours in the BGs to get 1 piece of gear.

Re: WoW no more
in my opinion, partially the reason the made the changes that they did is to accommodate the player base that doesn't play 10 to 12 hours each day. to give an example, my roommate in college would literally play for 18 hours a day, provided there where no classes and he didn't have to work. While I can not say "I didn't do that." you do have to realize that the majority of the WoW players I have met, log on and play maybe 5 hours after work or school, and goto bed. Is it wrong to deny them chances for the same gear the person spending 18 hours a day in game earns? No. but it might take them a lot longer to earn that gear, and if Blizzard tweaks it so people don't have to make such a long drawn out effort it's their call. If you don't like it, might I recommend you go back to playing Diablo or Diablo 2?

I tried eve, it was cool but not my kind of action. I must say though, Dreadnoughts are one of the most impressive things in gaming today.
It wasn't so much that people's gear was better than mine, or even the fact that they made said gear easier to get. I think blizzard has even said it themselves that they wanted wow to accommodate both casual and hardcore players, which I'd have to agree it does. I guess I'm just trying to say they're not doing anything wrong, I'm just fed up with their changes that seem to be leading the game down an easier path.
on an unrelated note, i think dayquil actually tastes worse than nyquil

Re: WoW no more
Heres how I get by in WoW...I ignore all the noobs in arena gear. Doesn't matter to me if i'm not pitching with 97 dps daggers. I'm getting my stuff the original way as it was made to be done, via raiding. I'd rather not deal with pvp anymore, its always lopsided to the horde...the alliance teams generally only want to lose so they can get honor and move on....and I hate dealing with people who have their fear command bound to some extensive macro.
Oh, never drink liquid Dayquil. Worst taste ever. Nyquil is fine but forget the Day in anything but the gelcaps.

I just came out of the coma tonight before the smurfing show! Claus Vanbulo was standing over my bed going, "Denis, get up! There's something the matter with Sunny! Hurry up!" I love NyQuil. Man, I love it! I love it. I love it. I love it. It's the best thing smurf ever invented. Isn't it, huh? I love the name alone. NyQuil - Capitol N, small Y, big smurfing Q! I love that smurfing Q, don't you!? What a great advertising idea! Put a huge smurfing Q on the box. They'll get high and stare at it. "The Q is talking to me! The Q is talking to me!"
I love NyQuil, man. Because NyQuil has never changed, man. It's never changed. All the other medicines are doing that inner-child thing. Because it doesn't matter what it tastes like! It's so strong you go, "*wheeze* Hey this stuff really tastes like.." Bang! Yer in the coma already! "What happened?" "He said tastes like and he went right into the coma, it was unbelievable!" We have reached the point where the over the counter drugs are actually stronger than anything you can buy on the street. It says on the back of the NyQuil box, on the back of the box it says, "May cause drowsiness." It should say, "Don't make any smurfing plans! Kiss your family and friends goodbye. Say hello to Klaus!" NyQuil, NyQuil, NyQuil, we love you! You giant smurfing Q!
NyQuil is the secret for all you twelve step recovery program people. Yes, all you AA people, NyQuil is the key! It's the thirteenth smurfing step! You can drink it! It's over the counter! Drink as much as you want. "Are you drunk?" "No! I have a cold. Same cold I've had for two years. I just can't seem to shake it. I'm high as a kite and my teeth are green. Merry smurfing Christmas!"
I just had to.

Re: WoW no more
PvP gear is better... for PvP, in most cases for most classes. Exceptions would be some of the Druid stuff, and the weapons (of course). We had several Mages and Warlocks, just completely pass when the Nexus Key (staff) from Kael'thas dropped because the Merc. Glad one is simply better, and they've been using that one for a while now. I'm sporting double merc weapons myself, but thats not to say PvE originating weapons haven't dropped... they have, but this way it allows me pass those to the guys in my guild who are without a couple 1900-2000+ teams.
At first I was irritated at the 'ease' at which you could accumulate very high ilvl weapons and equipment, but after being on both ends of the new system, it really doesn't bother me seeing people in a few pieces of Merc Glad gear, because I know that for PvE Rogues, Merc Glad isn't exactly "good", and many 68-70 blues are more ideal. It's a good outlet for those people who dont have a lot of time to play and want to see character development, but it does deminish (to a degree) the 'end game' raider, and their effort in my opinion.

About the time my guild started SSC for the first time I realized how sick I was of playing a Night Elf. So I spent the next week and a half and farmed ~10000 gold, and then rerolled a Human Female Rogue.
Cyrithor is logged out in as much pre-bc gear as he still had, as like ah... a token to remember the old days by I guess. My main is Rivak, I think I have a link in my sig to her armory here on the MAF.

Erm, mind sharing with me how you farmed 10k gold in 1.5 weeks?
I mean i figure if I run dailies, finish up every quest and sell ore on the side I can get a 10th as much in that time.

No dailies involved. You can only do it as a combat rogue, and your server's economy has to support high price enchanting mats. Head to mana tombs and open chests. Reset and profit.

We're both on Dalvengyr, and I'm pretty sure the economy doesn't support much.
And I can easily solo 2 elite mobs consecutively on my build with my PVP combat-prep build. Despite my inferior gear.

Whatever floats your boat. I usually hit the instance limit so farm terocone while I wait, or just afk. Mechnar is good too, but the risk of death is high, and its only better money if you get consecutive blues. Our server does support enchanting mats, how else would I have done it.
