Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
All,
You guys helped make the jump from classic to OS 10. I have been plugging along for a while with no problems but I am experienceing something I have never seen:
I turn my mac on and leave the room and when i come back it is off, not asleep but off! I was backing up my hard drive and the same thing happened again tonight. has anyone evr seen anything like this. This has happened around 4 times now. The only thing I have done is my computer seemes slow so under help it said turn the processor performance to highest in the energy saver mode other than that I cant think of anything else. Hope someone here has seen something like this before. I hope it is nothing bad but I have a couple of months left on my 3 year service deal so if it is dying hope it dis soon, actually I hope there is something you guys can suggest as I love my computer!!
Thanks in advance!!

Are any other devices besides keyboard and mouse attached ? What are they.
What kind of keyboard is it ? Are any keys stuck ?

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
OK, beeps and flashing lights are a clear sign of a hardware problem.
I don't mean to sound like and ass, but contrary to the last two posts, this problem almost certainly has nothing to do with power cords, mice, or keyboards.
http://www.welovemacs.com/whdoallthbme.html
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Shut down (don't restart) and power your Mac up. Try to get it to beep / flash again. This may not happen immediately and you may need to do this several times. Count the number of beeps your mac is making.
Or, you may want to try the hardware test CD which may have come with your Mac. That might be able to diagnose this problem.
Have you installed RAM recently? If so, bad RAM could be the problem.

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
You need to call Apple and get this documented.
A million seconds is 12 days.
A billion seconds is 31 years.
A trillion seconds is 31,688 years.
Hope and change could be forever.

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
I called apple and they made me do a SMC reset which I had never heard of. I have tech tool pro and I ran all the tests and they passed but like an idiot I rebuilt the volume structurse and that ran ok so I tried to optimise and it shut down in the middle of that! It seems everything is OK. I will try to unhook the trimring. I have a USB hub attached and off and a firewire cable hooked up and unplugged, but I have had all that the same for 2,5 years. I recently updated extensis suitcase but I cant believe that is the problem. They want me to take my imac to a apple store and leave it there.
I really dont want to do this as even though I have no top secrets all my keeychains etc to my banks etc are there. I backed up all my stuff but still kind of leary eraseing my whole drive.....
I have 1 gig of ram and it seems to be working so the test says....
Thanks for all the suggestions any more will be greatly appreciated. I think it is a power supply issue but they said that usually would go dean and not come back on??? Should I do a PRam thing??? Also what is the hardware test that came with the mac?? do you mean tec tool deluxe???
Thanks again Rob

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
It has turned off around 10 time now over the last week or so and it only beeped once, that was when as soon as it shut down I instantly turned it back on. The keyboard is the apple on that came with it and I am using a turbo mouse pro kensington.

Hardware test is a CD that you probably have.
Backup your files to CD or other hard drive, and take Big Mac in for a date with shake and fries.

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
Try to power it off and leave it overnight. Do you use UPS? If yes, maybe the UPS battery is low?
1. Instill fear.
2. ???????? (use your imagination)

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
Considering the beep, I'm betting this is a RAM problem.
But yeah, back it up, take it in, and prepare for the worst (all of your data erased).

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
I unpluggeg all the cables event thei nternet cable and found the aplle cd aand ran rhe test, everything passed. I shut i down and unplugged the cable to remove the trim ring and tried to so the same SCM thing the guy told me that is hold down the power button and plug in the power. When I did I got on single loud beep and the flashing indicator light a weird screen like in unix saying: welcome to firmare and to continue booting type mac-boot, return or to shutdown type shut-down return.???? It passed aall the memory tests. Im not sure what UPS is but the machine is plugged in all the time. Before I take it in what shoul I erase all my files or just personal ones, I mean can I leave my itune or applications? I was rerally hoping it was the ccord thing....
Thanks Rob

Take out all but 1 RAM chip. If there's no beep, then a bad RAM chip has been removed.

What is the internal temperature of your computer? Might be safety system to shut down your iMac if it gets too hot... Check the cooling fan... does it have a fan?

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
The fans were working fine.
Upon the advice of my apple friend I bypassed the local mac retailer and went to the apple store in Thousand Oaks. They have a genius bar which was really strange to me, with 10 people with dropped ipods and iphones. The lady who helped me seemed knowledgeable but when I told her I was on several mac web boards she was not impressed. murphys law the machine would not shut down but I explained the problem in detail and suggested the ram or power supply and she mentioned firm ware which I dont think it is. I thought they sent the machine out for repairs but she said they do all the work there....
I will withold judgement until the machine comes back but I have a bad feeling.
The staff was friendly but I was expecting more of a drop off and some tech person looking at it later. They tried to diagnose and fix the problem while I was there. Mainly people were in for dropped iphones and ipods that would not work with windows etc ant they were pretty liberally handing them out.
On another note the new imacs have a glass screen which is highly reflective and I dont like it. I bet next years goes back to flat. I have a LCD and what I like about it is in any room light you can see perfectly...

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
Typical Apple retail response. Too often a bit lamer than what I would do.
Why would you need to call Applecare ? ( no need to answer that )
Keep us informed.

Re: Imac not crashing but turning off!!!!!
All,
Well the apple store finally called and I went and picked up my imac. It was late so I plugged it in and didnt really get to play with it much but the dark lines are gone on the display and all my stuff was still there that I did not get to erase. (scary? or cool...???)
They said they had to replace a power supply and the logic board. I have a question, I have a m-audio audiophile digital firewire interface which I hook my stereo up to. There are alot of warning about hot pluggging the firewire device as this has caused other devices to burn out the Firewire bus port in your computer or disable the firewire device itself. I am only mentioning this as a possible cause for my problem. That said I did not unplug or plug in the said device at anytime while on however I am pretty sure the imac shut down once or twice with the device on. I then shut it down and restarted the mac.
Anyway we will see what happens....
Thanks for all of your help and suggestions
