Map Tease

Work is progressing on new maps for future downloadable content, with the design and art teams vigorously engaged in the process. More entertainingly however, the ad-hoc test team of Bungie staff is enjoying these new maps greatly. My favorites are what I have already nicknamed Jodrell Bank and Moonbase Alpha.

I “invented” a game type on Jodrell Bank which is actually just Team Slayer with Swords and Snipers. Thanks to some unique geographical features of that map, it works great. Moonbase Alpha, on the other hand is best suited to objective games, like CTF and Assault, but it has some natural deadlocks that make Slayer interesting and Infection terrifying.

Which reminds me of one more downloadable map. The scariest map of all time. Dark, frightening and surprisingly enormous. One of the scariest things that has ever happened to me (and this in a lifetime fraught with terror) was racing away from a marauding gang of zombies in Infection atop a Mongoose, only to have one leap out of the darkness ahead and unseat me with a throaty scream. I call that level John Carpenter’s Prince of Dorkness. It’s not as catchy as Jub Jub, but it’s every bit as accurate.

Plus some humor. (Btw... anyone besides everyone notice those are basically exploding BOBs? Heh... tho that's not the joke).

Gonna make me buy some XBL cash when those packs come out. Just wish they had still been in the original game. Man I hope they add a CTF only tree with them also. Tired of sitting through other gametypes hoping for CTF.

Hehe, I thought I killed me a few suicide grunties. I saw it but didn't hear the frogblast quote so I didn't think much of it.

Re: So whats wrong with Halo 3...

My first playthru I saw none. On replay I'm seeing them fairly often, or at least hearing them. When grunts go Kamikaze they start yelling 'Yi-yi-yi-yi' or suchlike war-whoop sound. Maybe that means "Thank God it's you!" wink

OTOH, I have seen quite a few errant throws- wrong angle, short, off a wall and back to stick themselves... and one of the Skulls greatly increases the number of 'nades AIs throw, also the number they drop when they die- great for those chain reaction fireworks. Add in Grunty Birthday Party (kill grunt, see burst of multicolored confetti and shouts of "..ray!") for a hella good time. smile

I don't like how they block you from driving vehicles in to buildings, when the vehicle clearly can fit through the opening. It's like an invisible force field that only blocks the vehicles.

That is occasionally frustrating, but sometimes play balance issues enter in. I have taken vehicles thru quite a few buildings, and if you get creative (say, melee the 'wings' off a Ghost to narrow it), you can do even more of that.

Did you ever get that onto your fileshare? Every time you play, it's saved as a film, and not overwritten by newer ones until you reach a limit...

How do I keep a Film I like?

If you think you’d like to keep a Saved Film, access it from your recent Saved Films stack in the Theater Lobby. Select the film you’d like to keep and press X. It is instantly Saved and will not simply vanish when you cycle through your film limit (which is either 25 films, or about 400MB worth, whichever comes first). To rename a film, go to the Theater Lobby, choose the type of film it is (Campaign, Multiplayer etc) and select it from the list. You should now be able to press X to edit the name and description.

...

How do I share my Films with friends?

You can recommend your Saved Films to anyone on your Friends list. Simply select them from the Guide while Halo 3 is running on your 360. You will now have the option to recommend a file to them, or see their publicly facing files in their File Share. If they decide to watch your Saved Film, a “bookmark” will take them to the film, where they can choose to download to their 360 immediately. If you receive a Saved Film, you can control it just like you made it yourself – however, a Clip will pay back with the camera moves used during the recording of the clip. It is still possible to detach the camera with the “Y” button, however and watch from your chosen angle.

Films may also be watched over Live in a party, with up to 4 friends watching simultaneously – however, because of the enormous amount of data and bandwidth required, this feature is best enjoyed with very fast connections – otherwise it is possible that the Films could simply run out of bandwidth, gently depositing you back in the Theater lobby. The Host of a Saved Film watched in network viewing mode is the only one who can control “time” (pausing , FFWD etc) but other viewers may control their own camera movements throughout.

Re: So whats wrong with Halo 3...

I just played a level last night called "Normandy Beach" that was based completely on the beach side of Last Resort. Not only do you have tons of turrets firing away at the water of the incoming team, but you have explosive barrels constantly falling from the sky.

The reason this was a drag, because otherwise it was a blast, is that the constantly falling and exploding barrels was graphically lagging the experience. Sometimes there would be an explosion right on me before I could even seen one fall. I'm kind of curious if the 360 has the graphical power to be able to pull of something I've seen in UT2k4 mods from three years ago.

I don't think I did. Might be on my 360, though.

It's one of the most played map variants.

Re: So whats wrong with Halo 3...

We may need another thread, on the lines of 'What's Right with [it].'

Meanwhile Bungie has ideas of their own (since when do they get a say? roll) in this:

Bungie Weekly Update: 10/19/07
Posted by lukems at 10/19/2007 5:22 PM PDT

Just like Santa, there are two lists. The Naughty and Nice – there’s something for folks on each list.

Harbinger of Doom

There are those of you doing things you shouldn’t be in Halo 3. Some of you have gotten a little too famous for your own good. This ain’t a church and there is no redemption or salvation once you have been judged. Apologies are now officially too late to save you.

The storm approaches.

Love, Bungie
=====

And now for the Nice Folks (which means almost everyone).

Most of the time, Bungie.net readers only hear from Frankie, myself or Sketch. Occasionally one of the web devs pops in and we'll talk to folks from the studio on the site, we gathered a bunch of quotes, quips, memories and thanks from members of the Bungie team and put them together for your perusal and hopefully, enjoyment. We're eternally grateful for your support. Now, on to the letters.
=====

“So long, Master Chief, we'll miss you. It's been a fun journey – now get some rest.

Thanks to everyone who has played, created and explored the heck out of this trilogy. I remember back in 1999 after finishing up the Myth World Cup, looking in from the outside and thinking ‘How can Bungie possibly make a community for Halo that's as great as the one that grew up around Myth?’ But I needn't have worried; the people are what makes the community, and we're lucky to have such a group of talented and inventive fans. Hope you guys like what comes next.”

-Chris Butcher, Engineering Lead
=====

Top 10 things heard during the development of Bungie.net:

• “Tom, could you look at your screen and tell me what you see?”
• “It’s going to be glorious.”
• Actual Bug Title: “Layout is seriously Screwed”
• Chris: “Check this out!” Colm: “huh…”
• “I thought we were going to make the site look better.”
• “Stosh, check your gamma.”
• “This is the page that will make everything perfectly clear.
• “No one will use screen shots, cut it.”
• “We’re going to rule the internets.”
• <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->“Zach, I need more hard drives.”

-Chris Gosset, Bungie.net Lead Web Developer
=====

“Writing the terminals was as maddening as it was fulfilling. There wasn’t enough room and not enough time to pour into it—there never is—with everything else that was going on. We still had to keep in mind that there were people who were going to be looking at these things on a tiny CRT. They should be able to read these things too—and that means a very limited number of words per page. Even with HD resolution there is only so much damage we are willing to do to your eyes—meaning none. And so our mantra became ‘brevity is the soul of wit.'”

-Robt McLees, Writer

And for those who have that Skull I mentioned previously...

“Big thanks to Greg Kirkhope and Rare for loaning us the perfect sound to go with the Grunt Birthday Party effect; it never gets old.  If you haven’t played Viva Piñata yet please do so immediately. It’s awesome. Go on, we’ll wait.
...

-Steve Scott, Pyrotechnician

Re: So whats wrong with Halo 3...

Slight bugginess kept Bungie from allowing editing/snippets of Campaign Films as with multiplayer films. At 5-15 MB, a full hour+ level film might fit on your fileshare, but many wouldn't be willing to wade thru it looking for highlights, even with full control as if it were their film. 35 straight deaths can get old quickly.

Please make Campaign edits work and patch, Bungie.

Re: So whats wrong with Halo 3...

k, think i'm almost bout ready to just head back to WoW only and leave the 360 off for awhile. Getting really tired of the players and how the ranking system works. Lost 2 skill ranks now from spawn killers on objective tree. Wouldn't even let you spawn...man its been bad. The game actually awards you more for being a jerk lol.

Also wish the player review part did more than just tell ppl they are obnoxious boneheads with the vocabulary of a jr high student who just discovered swearing but hasn't yet discovered that constantly spamming f-bombs doesn't make his penis grow bigger. I don't mind some colorfulness but unless they are sending tactical info, they need to really shutup and get off the voice line. Half the time i'm in the middle of relaying info on a key position to take and they are spamming like crazy to the point no one hears it. Like a bunch of horny monkeys let lose on a female in heat. Glad there is at least a mute button. I just mute it then go solo...tho sometimes I go turncoat and help the other team, but that depends if the monkeys raised a fuss when I finally tell them to shutup.

Re: So whats wrong with Halo 3...

Yeah i've toyed with the UT3 demo some but i'm trying to limit stressing my PC too much till I can get a replacement CPU. Heat this summer damaged my CPU. Got my 3800+ underclocked now to 1.6Ghz just to keep it stable. It was at 1.8Ghz a week ago but then it suddenly started locking up at that.

Just got Orange Box and Lost Planet for b-day too and i'm leery about playing them. Plus running both of those underclocked will really stink in performance.

As far as the XBL friends go...I never see enough on when I do play tongue.
