Ordered New 24" iMac......Just Now
First new Mac in 5 yrs for my home. Yippeee!!!
I've had cash in hand for several months now, just waiting for Leopard. With today's announcement and the $10 up-to-date program, I went ahead and just ordered it.
I got the 24" with the 2.8 GHz extreme. This is an absolutely unique time to get an iMac, with the OS, iLife and computer all in the very early stages of their upgrade cycles. To maximize value on it, I started with the standard 2.4 Ghz 24" unit, and upgraded the processor to 2.8 and left the RAM at 1 GB. Then, following an excellent suggestion from D'Eyncourt, I grabbed a 4 GB RAM upgrade from OWC for $175. Quite a steal.
Still reading in a lot of other forums about a higher-than-acceptable failure rate with the screen gradient problem and freezing issues from the iMac 1.1 update. These things make me a little worried, but I am operating under the premise that on-line forums tend to give an over-estimated biased perspective of the frequency of such problems. I figure, if it comes up a dud, I can always return it. We will see.
Super excited.

Yup. Funny thing is - as polarizing of an issue as the glossy screen has been around the Mac community, that huge, gorgeous, glossy 24" screen is the item I am most excited about the new iMac.
I only get a new computer every 5 years or so. Last time I decided I wasn't going to skimp, that was when I switched to Macs. This time, I am just drooling over the 24" iMac. Now the waiting......It is a little bit if a pain, because the system is going to arrive in 3 pieces: the iMac, the up-to-date ordered Leopard, and the RAM.

Been a Mac fan my whole life, but I still don't get how they get away with that.

Agreed. It's a total ripoff, but thank goodness there are other places to get ram from.
Congrats on your new computer! Those new iMacs are really beautiful!

It would be nice if Apple stopped trying to rip people off like that. Do they handcraft the stuff or something?

Re: Ordered New 24" iMac......Just Now
I've got the new 24" 2.8GHz as well. I also bought 4GB RAM from OWC! I've had this beauty since September 4th. So far, none of the screen issues and really none of the freezing issues. So, I'm reading about the freezing when using iTunes on another forum. The poster says, the screen will freeze if you are in iTunes store and you pick on a genre in Browse, then quickly scroll up and down on the browse list. Yup! it happened, frooze up, tighter than a drum. I also couldn't force quit iTunes. However, I could just leave iTunes frozen and use other applications. The only way out of the frozen iTunes was to reboot with the power button.
Well, since I previously had not ever vigorously scrolled up & down an iTunes browse list, I decided right then & there that I wouldn't do in the future either. And I haven't had a problem with freezing since. Amazing. I do believe there is a problem (bug) in iTunes or some snippet of system code. The lesson here is: Speed Kills!
You'll love your new iMac czachorski. Just don't speed in iTunes.

Support coverage.
If your Mac fails, Apple-supplied RAM is included in your coverage. Third party upgrades aren't.
You should look up prices of hard drives and RAM from corporate big iron vendors like SiliconGraphics, IBM, or HP. That's a hoot and a holler.

You state that like it is some kind of actual justification......

I really thought I'd stated it as an explanation only, but, hey... Whatever blows your skirt up, I guess.
