TIPS FOR UPGRADING TO TIGER WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A DVD DRIVE
Since Tiger is DVD only, you can always go ahead and pay an extra $10 US to get it converted to CD's. Or, you can do it this way:
For this you will need a Firewire Combo or SuperDrive. Pop the Tiger install disk into the Firewire drive. From here you will need to go to System Preferences and hit the Startup Disk preference pane. Let your Mac work things out and you will see the Tiger install DVD on your list of devices. Hit it and then click the restart button. The system will ask if you're sure (of course you're sure!) and the Tiger install CD will then take over.

Tiger and Panther are both worthy upgrades from all previous versions. http://www.apple.com/macosx/ The NEW FEATURES and OVERVIEW are readable for the features.
A G3 iMac which is 400 Mhz or more can run Tiger comfortably with sufficient RAM. You MUST upgrade the firmware first. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130 Download from there and PRINT the appropriate section of this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html … 30#English (copy into Appleworks).
If your iMac has a DVD player, then you can use the ordinary Tiger install. If not, you must special order a Tiger CD-based version.
You need to have AT LEAST 3 GB of empty disk space, but I recommend 5 GB at least.
If Tiger sounds expensive, you can get Panther http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/6914909A/
Educational discounts can save you quite a bit also.

Thanks for being beautiful. Actually I am wondering on the possiblilty of getting a 'refurbished' Mac book - a real cute practical one ..but this iMac refurbish idea is excellent.

Hey thanks Brainiac for providing such wonderful tutorial on Tiger upgrade. Your FAQ covered almost everything from upgrade process to third party utilities, files backup, etc. All my applications are working well after the upgrade... no problem at all. Thanks for all the useful tips and advices.

Man, this scared me. I read all the way through the incompatibilities list and got to FireFox and Flip4Mac and realized... this is a freaking old thread.
Let alone that the thread title specifically says Tiger.
