Time Machine on laptops
Hello fellow addicts, long time lurker, haven't posted in a long time.
I've pre-ordered Leopard (naturally) but ever since I've been reading about how Time Machine works I've wondered how well it will work on a laptop.
I use a Macbook all day every day, for work and at home, so I'm always toting it around with me. A lot of the literature I have seen for Time Machine indicates that it will require an external drive to work properly.
How will Time Machine work if I do not have an external drive to back up to that is always hooked up? I have one that I can hook my laptop up to periodically (would leave it on my desk at work) but will it be able to back things up that were worked on when the drive was not hooked up? Will I be able to restore anything if the external drive is not hooked up (my logical assumption here would be no)?
Is there something I am missing?
Can Time Machine use the same volume it as backing up as the backup drive? If so, I may just buy a large disk for my Macbook and do traditional periodic backups to an external drive like I do now.
Regardless I am slathering over getting my hands on my copy of Leopard! Can't wait until Friday.

If it's a USB 2.0 drive, you can also connect it to the new Airport Extreme base station and use it via wireless...
It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Yeah, this is how I plan to set this up. Anyone know if I can have TWO machines backed up to the same drive? Especially and specifically over Airport's AirDisk?
