Sorry to inform you but, NO. Time Machine couldn't possibly begin until you turn it on after you install OS X 10.5.

If you can't get into your account, about the only avenue open to you is to boot into single user mode and use the fix Apple posted on their support page yesterday (10/26).

You might try this login fix:

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

Just a question but why upgrade? Also after about an hour of looking I can't seem to find an article I once saw about booting and the big red X.

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

This has been the worst experience of my life. 15 hours just to get here. First I could not boot then I could not login then my internet would not work, now:cry: my norton firewall is not working. My only advice is never buy a software package new I waited 3 years before migrating from 9 to 10 and I was amazed how easy it all was this was a nightmare I will never forget, and I am one of the biggest mac fans having converted at least 10 PC owners and on my 3rd mac. I feel like an idiot and wonder how long it will be before all my other software becomes 10.5 compliant........

Now I know how a PC guy feels when he uploads vista......

Rob
very bummed

Oh I had to boot from the DVD to change my login priviledges and now I have a guest (root) profile I cannot delete....... any suggestions?javascript:insert_text('cry',%20'');

Did you notice that 10.5 adds a "Guest" account profile in the "Accounts" preference pane. You can't delete the profile, but you can shut it off so it doesn't show up in the list on the Login screen. Is this the profile you can't delete? confused

Provide more info on what you mean by "guest (root) profile.

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

It isn't the root user if that is what you mean. Also, it isn't really a profile so much as gives "guests" the ability to connect to the machine in one way or another. Disabling it isn't a bad idea.

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

The only way I could login as administrator was boot up from the DVD and from advice on this board I selected change password or something to that effect from utilities menu. When I could finally boot up from the HD 10.5 I had a new guest which I logged in as root then gave myself admin privileges. Now this guest wont go away and i cant click the - at the bottom of the screen to remove him.

He is called guest account and it says disabled.  If I log in as him his name is root and I use my pw and he is another administrator. I guess I should leave him so when i intstall 10.6 bobcat I will be able to log into my computer......

If anyone has an idea to get rid of him let me know.

BTW Thanks for all the help. I was really freaking out last night maybe because i was up till 3 trying to login etc.....

Rob

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

You can't get rid of it to my knowledge. I have it to and it won't budge.
Also how do you like Leopard?

Norton products tend to break, break your mac, or both.

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

I quit using Norton when all their stuff broke in Tiger (or was it Panther, I can't recall). OS X's firewall seems pretty secure to me. I've had zero intrusions. Knock on wood! wink

I know this is on topic, but, did you get everything working, save for the "phantom" guest account?

P.S. - Does anyone know why I have plain vanilla folder icons for Applications and Documents on my dock instead of the icons with symbols on them like other accounts on the same computer have? Also, Downloads shows up looking like the icon for a disk image. Weird. confused

I would ignore the guest account for the time being.

Never mind. I figured it out. The icons take on the attribute of whatever is in that folder first or last in the case of downloads.

Different. blush

Re: Leopard HELP cant Reboot??????????

Well Thanks for asking. I think everything is working so far. First thing I did was turn off and lock Time machine, I dont want anymore suprises for a while!I  deleted Norton Firewall. I cant wait till David Pogue writes one of his books on Leopard. I guess i should have read a bit more before I installed it but I have had such good luck with everything apple for so long i wasn't expecting to spend my whole weekend installing a new upgrade. I hate to say it but Im not that impressed but I have spent almost all my time just getting functional so maybe I will see.

One of the things i was excited about was dragging a bunch of my app into the dock in smaller icons like all the scanner programs, all the microsoft office, adobe etc. and have not had any luck doing that. When I tried the applications ended up in the dock and I sure dont what that in case I delete one on accident!

Thanks for all the help

Rob

at least I dont think I lost anything and hey I made a new friend (guest)!
