Re: UT3 Demo Soon

Finally got me a non que wait time download. I'm liking what i'm seeing. Shock Rifle is fast again and many of the other guns react more like original UT. Rocket Launcher is still a disappointment...it needs a full 6 shot load up. 3 shots is not enough.

Also noticed the dmg taken is a lil higher. Instead of roaming around blasting and not dying like in 2k, this is more like Halo 3. Shields don't seem to help much.

Ooo and another plus, the enforcer is back *sends thank you cards to Mark*

Jump dodge is the only thing missing. Double jump is there. AMOF it's the way to activate the jump boots.

Jump dodge? You mean when you double-tap to dodge? That's there.

Yes good ol' dodging is there. In K3-4 they added jump dodge which gave a distance boost if you did double tap-jump. That is gone in favor of UT99 style of movement.

::EDIT to add::
So far I'm like what I see too in game. Couple things I'd like to see changed, not that they'll happen tho. One the 'being shot at' blur/screen changes. The action is too fast to be so distracted by your screen going funky too. Add insult to injury. Second is better indication on where the damage is coming from. Too often I'm watching health disappear wondering where on earth is it coming from.

The UI needs work. Way too much drilling down just to get a game on and the server screen. :gag: Epic has been in a downward spiral in terms of UI. '99 Good, K3-4 Blah, UT3 Gag.

IIRC, originally Vivid was too intense for you in Gow... maybe it grew on you? For me, after the last 360 update added proper light/ dark VGA range, it became almost a mood thing. Anyhoo AT follows up:

Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo: Top to Bottom GPU Analysis

We've already looked quite a bit at Unreal Tournament 3, but, as promised, here is our low end and mainstream GPU analysis of the beta version of the demo for Unreal Tournament 3. Certainly not a string of words that instills confidence in how well these numbers will represent final game play, but it's the best we've got right now for the best looking UE3 game to date.

Our first look at high end GPU performance showed that AMD's Radeon HD 2900 XT was able to best NVIDIA's flagship hardware in a number of cases and remained very competitive even at high resolutions. Will this trend hold for the rest of the lineup, or is the 2900 XT just well suited to UT3?

We'll find out when we put our hardware to the test. First we will look at low end GPU, then the mainstream parts. Finally, we will bring it all together and look at performance across the board. Before we get to the numbers, here is the hardware we used for these numbers.

Unreal Tournament 3 Goes Gold For PC; Ships Nov. 19

Midway has announced that Unreal Tournament 3 has now gone gold for the PC. The latest game in the sci-fi shooter series from developer Epic Games will ship to stores on Nov. 19. The press release stated that the release of the Playstation 3 version "will follow soon" but did not give a specific date.

Epic Games's Efforts To Dismiss Silicon Knights Lawsuit Denied

Biz.Gamedaily is reporting that a motion by Epic Games to dismiss the lawsuit filed by game developer Silicon Knights has been denied. Silicon Knights sued Epic earlier this year, alleging that Epic had committed fraud by not supporting its Unreal Engine 3 game development tools (Epic has denied the charges). Epic VP Mark Rein is quoted as saying that the latest court decision is "not unusual" and added, "It is important to note that this was not a decision on the merits of Silicon Knights' claims." Silicon Knight's attorney Christopher T. Holland is quoted as saying, "....we're pleased that the court has recognized the merit in our claims and we're happy that we can now proceed as planned with all the claims we brought for discovery and trial." A trial date has yet to be set.

Re: UT3 Demo Soon

Having now spent some quality time with the demo I can make some real comments.
1. No AA. To get playable FPS on my rig I had to turn off pretty much all of the eye candy (bloom, depth of field etc.). Even without AA and all of the other stuff gotta say this game continues to look good at 1920 x 1200. Not sure that AA would really add to the enjoyment at resolutions of 1920x1200 and above. I was able to maintain av FPS at a playable 40-45 with my ancient system.

2. Movement. I still find myself trying to dodge-jump even when I know I can't. I guess it is muscle memory from 2K4. The pared down movement is like the original UT with double jump still there. The surf board (grav board?) serves the purpose to get you back in the action but you're going to need the jump boots to get to those hard to reach places.

3. The surf board. As above but I do not like the recovery time from a fall. Basically you go down under fire you are toast with no way to defend yourself.

4. Vehicles. Limited choices in the demo. The tank seems easier to take down. Chained shock balls in the Bender are nice. What the hell is the Scorpion shooting? Driving the Scorp and the Bender is a pain. The steering is way too sensitive -- power steering on steroids. The flying stuff seems just right. The Necris walker (can we say War of the Worlds boys and girls) is a blast!

5. The menu interface. At least in the demo I think that it sucks! Unless a lot changes in the final you will be doing some serious ini diving. The server browser in the demo is very bad and I hope it was just a tack on for the demo.

My experience with this demo on my PC makes me concerned just how well this game will run on Mac. I really doubt that it will be good on my 2x2 G5 and probably not on my MBP Duo. We'll have to wait and see what magic Ryan weaves.

Hey at least you got the demo to run above 1024X768. I can't even do that. Once I do push it my machine shuts off.

1) Yup even running at ugly it looks damn good.

2) lol URNOTALONE.

3) Easy don't fall off. wink

4) Yup, yup, yup. What you don't like scorpion balls!?!

5) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE BRING BACK UWINDOWS! Yeah UT has been in this downward spiral in terms of the GUI.

On Macs I wouldn't expect much on the x1600 cards but if you've got 7600 or better you might be ok and Intel. I'm not sure if this will make the cross to G5s or not. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

As mentioned elsewhere, a few hundred $ in upgrades e.g. an X1950 (AGP) would improve things muchly in your ancient [ca. early 2004 smile] rig, but that's your call. And

Another testing note -- antialiasing was not running for any of these tests.  Just like the previous UT3 engine games we have tested (Rainbow Six: Vegas and Bioshock) the game does not have any options for AA and forcing on AA at the control panel resulted in no image quality differences.  As for future AA support, I am told that by the second demo release and the retail release, Epic should have a patch out for the Unreal Engine 3 that will enable AA support across the board.  Let's hope so -- missing such a standard feature in an engine like this is just crazy!

Sweeney has always said DX10/Vista would be needed for FSAA under Winders. They get some in GoW on 360 via proprietary functionality in Xenos (not enough to my eye, but it was the first major UE3 title. Hopefully a year of codebase advances will benefit UE3 in this). We should see in the final, non-beta demo.

Yup. No word on PPC support, but at least UT3 seems less CPU- than GPU-limited, or so Epic says. Edit: Maybe the Scorp shoots Nerf shells, and FSAA always helps- with texture shimmer and more, not just jaggies.

So have they taken it back to it's UT99 roots?  That's all I want, the UT2k's all felt more like a sandbox jumble for some reason and never captured the feel I had with UT99, and it looked like they were trying to step back to that a bit while keeping it new.

No, it's a new game. UT99 is the past get over it, move on. If you enter into a game with judgmental expectations then the situation is doomed to fail from the beginning.

It's not so much that I want UT99 back, but there was just something about it that appealed to me more than any of the UT2k's.  So even if it isn't UT99 at all, would you guys who have tried it say it feels like a different breed than the UT2k?  Or at least that it vastly improves on them?
