Video editing software

I need to some very simple video editing; basically cutting and creating compilations from .AVI files I take with my digital camera and maybe overlaying some audio. I'm running 10.5 on a 933 G4 iBook and thus can't use iMovie 08. I have an old copy of Final Cut Express 1.0.1, but running it on Leopard is not pretty, it's one crash after another.

Can anybody recommend a program that will suit my needs? I'd prefer open-source if possible.

Re: Video editing software

I'm not aware of any FOSS solution, but you can pick up iLife '06 (which contains iMovie HD, which will run on that iBook, albeit a bit slowly) from many vendors.

Re: Video editing software

Didn't Apple give iMovie HD away for free to all that didn't like the new iMovie? I've tried searching for it but can't find anything.

Aah, here it is. Found it using Google but not while using Apples own search, wonder why...

Re: Video editing software

That's a sweet find, Mymac4ever. Unfortunately I don't have iLife '08. I think I'll eventually just upgrade the FCE to version 3.5, at $119 (when will Apple lower the Canadian prices??), it's a good deal considering it came with my iBook when I bought it second-hand.

In the meantime though, I came across jahshaka http://www.jahshaka.org/. It's working good enough for me, mind you a bit slow on my ol' lappy.

Thanks folks.

Re: Video editing software

I've been using SimpleMovieX (shareware) which is much faster for editing stuff for quicktime than dirge-slow iMovie which converts everything to DV first.  Of course, there's Quicktime Pro which you can't try-before-you-buy and which regularly updates over your registration, and which I have never used.

oh sorry missed that little fine print saying you have to have iMovie 08 installed. Why couldn't they just give it away for free or atleast sell it cheaper?
