HDV

Ok so we had a session accidentally recorded in HDV instead of standard def DV25; which is no big deal; everything captured into FCP as expected, but....

Jesus HDV sucks ass big-time if you need process stuff like color correction and what not.  And the time to compress to MPEG2 to go on DVD is just plain insane.

Granted I don't have the latest hot-rod 8-core MacPro, but guess what, you smurfing need one if you are going to do anything in HDV because of time it takes to process the damn video.  What a smurfing joke for consumers.

Re: HDV

Next time, either capture using the Apple Intermediate codec, or transcode HDV to the Intermediate codec. It overcomes the sluggishness of native HDV editing, though at the expense of drive space. Not that HDV's color space is any good, but the codec retains it. This Apple doc explains better than I:

Re: HDV

Hmmm, I may have to try that the next time I have to deal with it.  I'm not very impressed at all by it though.

Drive space really isn't an issue since I do a lot of stuff in uncompressed 10bit SD.

Well, ya know. Between it and HDV, it's the lesser of two evils.

What version of FCP are you using to edit your media?

Well I have FCP v5.x.x; Basically FCP Studio 1, but the latest upgrades to all those apps.

But it is not like I am going to make it a habit of editing in HDV; it was a mistake on show site.

Re: HDV

HDV is indeed teh suck on non-Intel machines.  Getting a Core Duo or above makes an incredible difference.  You're not going to render in real-time (especially downconverting to SD), but FCP on a mac pro cuts through HDV like a hot knife through warm butter.

That may be so, but the G5 was faster than my MacBook Pro. 2Ghz vs. 2.3.  And yes, both were using the same media drive.

But I have no doubt that a MacPro whips it like a wet noodle.  I just find it funny that you need a Uber Pro machine to actually make it a useful format to edit with considering it is targeted at consumers.
