Registering

So I have one semester of school left.  I have 15 remaining credits, but only one class left that I need to take for my degree.  It's a GE, a lab science I kept putting off until I had earlier registration times so I could get a decent lab science class that wasn't at 8 am.  This semester, as it is my last one, I finally have an excellent registration time, but sure enough, starting this semester, my school decided to let FRESHMAN register before everybody else, as apparently they need help.

Naturally, the class I was going to take is now full.  This is absolutely infuriating.

Re: Registering

Talk to your advisor and the professor teaching the class. They might have a wait list to let you in.

Re: Registering

Why in the hell would freshman need to register for classes first? Although you probably should have taken the class before (I'm in no real position to judge, because morning classes = Never ever ever ever), it's asinine that freshman would get priority.

Re: Registering

Hah, registration times! I just go into my advisor's office when registration opens for all non-seniors, give him my course numbers, and if everything checks out, then leave. Although, this time around, he wanted to get pics of all the undergrads in our department.

Re: Registering

I sent my advisor and the registrar AND the dean of students scathing emails.

The reason I haven't taken this yet was so I could get a decent class that wasn't at 8 am on a Friday, something I should have priority on since I am a graduating senior.

Apparently the Freshman are registering early because they need help, whatever that means.

I guess this is the downside to going to a smaller school.  Worst case scenario, I take this at community college or something, which isn't the end of the world but this situation makes me incredibly angry.

Re: Registering

I don't think scathing was necessary.

A visit to their office would probably have been enough.

Re: Registering

I support your scathing letter.

Bottom line, a bunch of these "helpless" freshman are going to flunk out or drop the class. Why are they getting priority after this guy has spent years doling out money and time and effort for his education?

Is what I said wrong? My Rock And Pop History class, one year ago = super freakin' easy. Class was filled at semester's beginning (50 kids). Class by end = about 35-40 kids still enrolled. It was a lower level class and the freshman (I knew most of them were freshman, it was a small community college in a smallish town) dropped the class like crazy.

It happens, and that's fine, I don't care. But if I had been shut out of a desired class so that it would go to 10-15 freshman who'd end up dropping it, I'd have been be pissed.

Re: Registering

Yeah, imacman has the right idea, I, along with most of the rest of the seniors, just feel like we got the short end of the stick here. They've never let freshman register first ever before, and many people put off classes just like I do for when they will actually get priority for it.

My scathing emails were reasonably upset, but not childish and name calling, I felt they were appropriate for the situation.

The registrar got back to me, saying this is an acknowledged problem and they will be thinking about adding more courses.  So I hope they do that.

Re: Registering

Letting freshmen enroll first is a ridiculous idea for this exact situation. You have one to go, you shouldn't have to wait for students who have 100 hours to go to enroll first before you get yours.

When I enrolled for the spring, two of the classes I wanted to take are already full. But I've never had a problem getting into a class, you just show up on the first day and talk to the prof and if you act interested in the material, they won't mind adding one more student, because certainly a number of people will drop out after week 4 anyways.

Re: Registering

I'm hoping I get in.  I emailed the professor, she said she sympathizes with me and wishes she could let the seniors in, but the school won't let her go over the size of the class for whatever reason.

I think I'm just going to show up and intimidate all the freshman into leaving with some mafia talk or something.  I think that would absolutely be the correct way to go about getting into the class.

Re: Registering

I got all the classes I wanted save for one, but 15 credits instead of 18 still keeps me ahead of the game and with less work for next semester big_smile

My day for registration came up four or so days after registrations opened for the high-priorities, and I'm only a sophomore.
