Most compatible OS9 email
I asked some questions in tech support already, but I think I may be working from the wrong direction here.
I've finally learned OSX through and through, and obviously there are a lot of incompatibilities with an intel MacBook and a beige G3. I use Outlook Express 5.0.6 on OS9, and simply can't get Entourage.app or Mail.app to import anything, even a text address export (Address Book freezes and doesn't recognize much). So my question is: What is the best, most compatible and up to date email program that I can go to for OS9, with the ultimate goal of importing everything to OSX?
Also, is there any way to have a more universal compatibility by uploading my OS9 inbox, outbox, etc, and downloading it with Mail.app? I can't believe that no one has had to do this but me...
THANKS!

Web based mail is an option - like g-mail where all your inboxes are online. Eudora version 6 has classic and OS X versions that work up to Tiger. You can set up Eudora so that more than one computer can access the same mailboxes and address book.

IMAP -- if your email provider has an IMAP server, you can just let your email live on the server and not have to worry about how different clients store email on your computer.
If I remember right, the last email client I used before switching to OS X and Mail.app was Eudora, and Mail.app didn't have any trouble importing mail from it -- apparently, it' not always that easy, but there's a program called Eudora Mailbox Cleaner that fixes problems others have had. Before Eudora, I used Outlook Express, but that transition was long enough ago that I don't remember whether I had to do anything tricky to get saved email out of OE and into Eudora.

You would need to set up the gmail account from an OSX machine because there are no browsers that will run on OS9 that can access Gmail.

I don't use gmail, so I can't speak to that, but wamcom works fine with Yahoo Mail.

Re: Most compatible OS9 email
Outlook Express 5 supports IMAP and it should work with Gmail. And Gmail can be set up to check other POP accounts. I've got my Gmail account pulling in my sbcglobal email.

Huh, well, that's what they say.
All I know is that browser incompatibilities were the primary reasons I switched to OSX when I did. I tried every browser I could lay my hands on and I found none that worked well with Gmail or several other sites I needed to access.
Truth be told had the browser situation not been as it was I wouldn't have bothered with OSX till Photoshop CS1 came out.

Hey thanks a lot guys...btw iCab and Netscape both work for gmail for me!
The main thing for me is contacts, not mail actually. I tried many many times many different ways to export as a text file, nothing worked at all.
And i DID try looking to save OE on OS9 to web, but absolutely couldn't figure out how to store anything online. I guess I'll mess around with some of the mentioned programs. Sorry for late response, very busy here, but now I'm working on this again.
ASHERdude, are you talking about OE for os9? Honestly I tried searching for that exact option - imap to save to the net, but couldn't find anything.

Re: Most compatible OS9 email
so whats the final on this one guys...I have a friend who's trying to access yahoo mail on his imac running OS9, it won't load the password page properly so he can't even log in ...is there a way around this,,,eg loading another browser onto his computer so he can access yahoo , or is there a combination of browser and mail that still works ok on an OS9 system that anyone is aware of...anything would be better than updating to OS10 as I don't think his computer would run it without expensive upgrades of RAM etc.. would be cheaper and more sensible to upgrade the whole computer ,,,any help would be apreciated thanks
