Generally, if it's warm enough to be snowing outside, well, that means it ain't even close to cold. tongue

does it really matter?  it's smurfing eight below!!!1!!one!!

in Celsius, it's just below freezing, and i believe 0ºC is equal to about 40ºF, therefore  0ºF is appx -40ºC, which is just almost bearable.

Umm, you got your conversions very mixed up there.

32F is 0 C which is the freezing point.
However they scale differently, only -40 C is -40 F, which is far from bareable. -8 C is around my favourite winter temperature.

(-8) degrees Celsius = 17.6 degrees Fahrenheit

In other  words if the OP of these series of quotes was complaining about the cold weather, I'll just ask if (s)he is serious (-20 here already).

Yes, it is.
That's why they use celsius in Canada. 'cause it's colder there.

If I could live near Banff Springs, Blackcomb or Lake Louise I might be convinced to move to Canukistan.  Otherwise I'll stay here where the worst that happens is a cold rainstorm and never becomes an ice storm.

I just tried out Snö. It makes snow flakes fall in front of your desktop windows which is like those really annoying ebay and geocities web pages people sometimes still make.

The other combo only puts it on the desktop background.

Though, in combination, the two make your mac a virtual snow globe.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

There is an incredible amount of beauty in winter, like everything glistening under a white sheet of snow, and the incredible feeling of peace and calm in a forest in winter. Winter in the country is lovely.

What's not lovely is the occasional ice storm/blizzard we get in Virginia, the traffic situation the day after said blizzard, the way everyone drives like they never took their drivers license test when even a *flake* falls from the sky, the ice and snow bombs that come off the trucks on the highway, and the way my county leaves me to dig myself out of my court if there's a bad snow or ice storm. Add to that the fact that I have to wear fifty layers just to keep my body temp above freezing. But otherwise, winter can be nice.

From a purely aesthetic perspective I agree with you. But I drive to work through the country and it can be the ugliest thing you've ever seen, or rather not seen, as the snow rolling up over the hood->windshield->roof of the car gets so thick you cannot even see out the back window.

Until I come roaring through on my snowmobile and leave tracks everywhere!  tongue

Got 3 hours in this afternoon running the ditches and woods.  The big ditch is nearly empty of water, so when you run down it, its like driving in a canyon.  Pretty awesome sight.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

tongue  @ ShnickyShnack  You're just jealous!

Duke, snowmobiling is indeed fun.  Running on your own land is more enjoyable, but trails can be fun as well.  Tonight we were jumping the ditch up in the back 40 that is freaking deep.  You can get 5-8' of air without even trying there.  There's nothing that can quite match the feeling of traveling at 100+ mph with your ass about 18" off the ground!  I'll drive my snowmobiles all crazy like, but I'm still terrified of taking the Vulcan 750 out in summer.  At least on the snowmobile, you don't have to worry about cars as much.

The trick to jumping is to head into the ditch letting it coast, then goose the throttle just as you get to the bottom of the decline.  Let off the throttle when you hear the engine start to scream as you are now airborne.  As soon as that happens, start to lean forward so you land with about 60% of the track on the ground and the skis should hit right after.  Don't try landing on the rear of the track as you will probably bend the undercarriage and collapse the tunnel.  That, and you will most likely be landing on your ass as you drop off the back of the sled!

Flying through the air is the best experience in the world!  Just don't be like my friend and let go of the sled.  He ended up sliding about 50 feet behind the sled when it landed and tossed him.

EDIT:  If anyone gets up this way, I'll give ya a ride.  Just dress very warm and wear clothes that give you maximum flexibility while still keeping you warm and dry.

Yes, I am jealous of anyone who thinks it's cool to shatter the glorious peace of a snow-covered forest with a noisy-ass machine.

There's a fair percentage of snowmobilers who die in brainless drunken accidents, who hopefully evolution will kick in at some point.

And there are people who enjoy shattering the peace with noisy race cars, dirt bikes, oh and heaven forbid, TRACTORS! roll  Its not like you have a snowmobile race track right next to your house.

There's a fair percentage of snowmobilers who die in brainless drunken accidents, who hopefully evolution will kick in at some point.

And there are a fairly large percentage of car drivers who die in brainless drunken accidents, an hopefully evolution will kick in for them too.  Its not the machine's fault you are annoyed, its the damn idiots that sometimes drive them.  I try to be kind to others when driving and keep the throttle down near homes and businesses on the trails.  Not everyone is so nice, but you can't generalize all drivers based on the few smurfs that spoil it for everyone.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

I love winter since it's the only time of year that I get to participate in a sport that I'm half way decent at. Therefore, it's the only time of year that I actually feel healthy.

That said, our winters have been fairly nonexistent as of late, and it's starting to annoy the smurf out of me. I want some snow in Tahoe, and I don't want to have to go through another annoying multiyear drought.
