network chat?

Does anyone know of a program that works like IM but only on computers on a certain network? If not, how would one go about writing such a program?

Gtalk would work. If you want to setup an IM network for a single domain, google apps would do the trick. Or setup a Jabber server and connect to that.

Re: network chat?

So, something like the Bonjour chat in iChat, or say, Adium?  But for computers of a variety of OS configurations?

Re: network chat?

I'm moving this out of Programming, since it's almost certain that writing your own application will not be feasible.  It definitely sounds like you want something that uses Bonjour, like iChat or Adium like Aqua Man mentioned, or Pidgin for cross-platform compatibility.

Re: network chat?

I'd say just use iChat. If you want to block users from using iChat to talk outside the network I'm told you can just block access to login.oscar.aol.com.

Re: network chat?

Ok, it's obvious I wasn't entirely clear. Here's my vision: a small lightweight chat app that gives you the option(or is based entirely on) chatting with other computers on a network(be it ethernet or wifi) using IP addresses like email addresses are used in Adium or iChat. Like for comps that are all connected together but for whatever reason aren't hooked to the intarwebs.

Re: network chat?

You may want to have a look at Jabber.  Apparently it is quite easy to set up your own Jabber server and then use either a Jabber client or iChat to connect.
