Charging an iPod on a new iMac
I just got a new iMac a couple of weeks ago. On Apple's website, it says, "...when you connect an iPod to one of the USB ports on the iMac, the iPod charges not only while your iMac is on but also while it’s in sleep mode." This is something that I was really happy about, because it would eliminate the need for an extra wall charger.
However, I've tried plugging my brand new shuffle into all three USB ports on the iMac, and as soon as I put the iMac to sleep, it stops charging. Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Charging an iPod on a new iMac
Hmmm...in the directions for my iPod Classic it says "Charge fully (up to 4 hours) while computer is awake."
I took that to mean that it would not charge while the Mac was in sleep mode.
I remember 4 years back when I had my first iPod it was discovered by MacFixIt that if you would leave an iPod connected to a sleeping Mac it would drain the battery, not charge it.

Re: Charging an iPod on a new iMac
Right, that was then. But apparently Apple added a new feature to the aluminum iMac where at least one of the USB ports on the computer is supposed to remain powered even while the computer is asleep. I mean, how else are you supposed to read the quote I mentioned above? I know that you've never been able to charge from your sleeping computer before, so when I saw this "feature", I really thought it was about time.
I've checked Apple's discussion forums, and I guess other people noticed that quote, and are having the same problems. It's not a huge deal, but it is a feature that they advertised, and didn't deliver on...

Re: Charging an iPod on a new iMac
Well, after various suggestions on Apple's discussion boards, I've still had no luck with this. So I just called Apple support and explained my problem to the customer service rep, and this was the conversation that followed.
CSR: "You cannot charge an iPod from the USB ports while the iMac is in sleep mode."
Me: "Are you sure, because if you look at (directed her to the webpage) it very specifically says that you can do this. It's not ambiguous about it at all."
CSR: "You cannot charge an iPod from the USB ports while the iMac is in sleep mode. This is not possible."
Me: "So you're telling me that the Apple website is wrong?"
CSR: "Well, I'm telling you that you cannot charge an iPod from the USB ports while the iMac is in sleep mode."
Me: "So you're telling me that the Apple website is wrong?"
CSR: "Yes, I guess that means that the website is wrong."
Now, this feature isn't a big deal to me. It's not really a selling point, although it really would be nice. But my big problem now is that there is incorrect info right on Apple's website, and that just looks bad. I doubt there's anything that can be done about it at this point, though.
