There's a fair percentage of snowmobilers who die in brainless drunken accidents, who hopefully evolution will kick in at some point.

I wasn't talking about tractors or dirt bikes or race cars. I was talking about the noise of snowmobiles.

They're noisy. The outdoors are peaceful. There must be a more civilized way of getting one's kicks.

I love winter since it's the only time of year that I get to participate in a sport that I'm half way decent at. Therefore, it's the only time of year that I actually feel healthy.

That said, our winters have been fairly nonexistent as of late, and it's starting to annoy the smurf out of me. I want some snow in Tahoe, and I don't want to have to go through another annoying multiyear drought.

I'm fine with waiting on the snow. I'm not looking forward to getting another MMS of a broken leg to my phone.

I like motorcycling and skiing so living in Collingwood is pretty good. I have Blue Mountain for skiing. I also have the same hill for motorcycling. The road where the powder snow was over my hood last week - Grey Road 19 - is one of the best motorcycle roads I have ever ridden. It isn't long, maybe 3 or 4 miles but if you have 4 testicles it can be a hell of a ride - not one corner you can justify taking at less than 200 km/h, uphill or down.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

I got stuck on glare ice under snow on my own driveway, trying to get to certain part of the driveway.

It's been so long since I've gotten stuck, I forgot the techniques to get out.   If I could dig out some frozen sand, that might have worked.     Or put some carpet remnants under the tires.

Anyway, with the help of the neighbor's pushing, I was out shortly.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

Carry a bag of cat litter or oil dry or sand in your car.  Then if you get stuck, you can spread it under the tires and down the path you need to travel and get decent traction.  They also make something that looks like a pair of nylons for car tires that gets you tons of traction.  Saw them in either Family Handyman or Popular Science last month.

There we go.  Cat litter or sand.  Both recycleable in the spring.   I already carry 2 shovels: 1 aluminum grain shovel and 1 heavy duty square spade.

It was pretty treacherous this morning, but thankfully no freezing rain for me.  Driving very cautiously 15-25 mph for most of the day.

Cat litter? Doesn't the poop get really slick when it freezes?

Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Re: Winter: love it or hate it?

Not only shoveling mailboxes for us and 2 neighbors, but I have to shovel the roof of the house.    I got the top layers off the easy part of the roof, but there's an inch of ice remaining.  Most of the roof is a 2 person job, where 1 person has to hold the other lassoed person.

For southerners, the ice can get between the shingles and cause leaks.

We will get out the garden hoses and connect them to the hot water heater to slice off the ice.   Next week.   We might hit 35 F.

Of course you hate it.  It's -8 C/17.5 F in Toronto right now, and you're expecting 35 cm/13.8 in. of snow!
