New and a couple of questions
I just bought a Mac Book last week for $1200.
I found out after getting home that it did NOT come with Leopard and had to go out and by the upgrade.
Trying to figure out Mac still, lots of things to learn. Seems the same as windows in alot of sense just different names and ways to do the same thing.
Likes and Dislikes after having 1 week.
Likes:
Fast Startup and Shutdown
Magnetic power plug.
Dislikes:
No right click on Laptop itself. Must change option to have it right click but still no true right click that I can tell. Fix around that I can see is using a Mouse that comes with right click button.
Maximize Button doesn't maximize without you first dragging it to the size you want it. Went to a forum for Mac users and it was discussed about the Maximize button and found that some of the Mac Users take it personnel as if its an attack against them if people say they dont like a way the Mac does something. Doesn't really mean anything, you get that with whatever people like.
QUESTIONS:
1)How do I know if my Mac Book has Intel so that I can run Bootcamp?
2) Which MacBook do I have? When I went to get memory on a 3rd party website, I didnt see MacBook but I saw G3, G4, MacBook Pro, etc...
3) Don't have internet connection yet unless I got to Starbucks for wi-fi. My question on this is that I been told my wireless card is inside. When I go to get internet from a wireless carrier such as Verizon and them will I need a USB version or I can just use the modem inside somehow?
4) Do I have to pay $99 for IChat in order to use the web cam to video chat and instant message?
Any answers are appreciated and thanks for your assistance!
By the way my name is actually Mac!
Mac OUT!

Go to the Apple Menu in the upper left corner and click on About this Mac. It will answer a lot of your questions.

Re: New and a couple of questions
For your last 2 questions, your macbook has an airport wireless card built in. So in wireless hotspots you are fine. If you go to a carrier that requires you use their wireless card for service (this true of satellite connections from Verizon, AT&T, etc), then you will need to get the USB connector.
Now, if you get a regular home service via a cable modem or DSL line, then all you need is a wireless router or to physically connect your macbook to the modem. No extra USB connectors needed. You essentially create your own wireless hotspot if you get the wireless router, which with a laptop is probably preferable so you can use the internet anywhere (barring interference and distance) in your home.
You do not have to pay anything to use video chat or do regular chatting in iChat.

Re: New and a couple of questions
Hi,
Any forum beginning with [MA] is one of the gaming clans. Unprefixed forums are towards the top of the list, and contain general topics like this one. Hence the move.
Welcome.
Leopard: Where the hell did you buy it? Call Apple and see if they'll sell you Leopard through the Up-to-date program.

It's not a maximize button, so toss that thinking out the window. What the green button actually does is make the window as big as the computer thinks it needs to be based on what's in it, and what the size of your screen is. As with anything a computer does while trying to emulate actual intelligence, it probably doesn't do what you want it to.
Thinking the OS does things funky is okay here. Because it does. In fact, Pariah will downright like you. Just stay out of the really long discussion threads if you have a thin skin.
1) If it's a MacBook, it's intel.
2) MacBook is the model. G3 and G4 Popwerbooks are older. MacBook Pro is the fancier version of what you have.
3) Depends on the carrier. Probably. Ask Verizon. Your card only supports WiFi 802.11b/g
4) You don't have iChat? Where the smurf did you buy your computer? Do you mean .Mac? Because then the answer is no.

Actually if it's the old CD model MacBook: WiFi 802.11a/b/g & BlueTooth
And if it's the new C2D model MacBook: WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n draft & BlueTooth

Re: New and a couple of questions
Verizon satellite connection: The have a USB device that is Mac compatible. With it you are not connected to a land line and are able to access your account and the net anywhere you can maintain a signal.
As dvpierce said, if you are in a WiFi hotspot, or have a wireless router at home connected to a land line you don't need anything extra.
Remember that there is a confusion of terms. Wireless WiFi is different than wireless cell. The wireless cell connection is what I think you are talking about with Verizon wireless carrier.

I think he means does he need to pay $99 on .Mac to make instant messaging & video chat in Chat work. If that the case no you can do it with a free AIM account.

Re: New and a couple of questions
Lacking an actual right click button, you can get the same function by holding the control button when you click.

If you go to System Prefernces -> Keyboard and Mouse -> trackpad, there will be an option of right clicking by placing two fingers on the pad while clicking, also enable some of the other options such as two fingers for srolling, as mit will make it a lot easier to manuever around.

The way that Macs do it is to to fit perfectly around the contents of the window, with no empty spaces and no scrollbars

If it says MacBook under the Screen, it's Intel. otherwise it would be called an iBook
Mac00953 wrote:

Core2Duo or just CoreDuo, depending on how old it is.

you will need an USB one, as the wireless is WiFi and Bluetooth. Verison Wireless internet is EV-DO

iChat icomes with the OS, but you don't need iChat. Adium or one of the other popular apps will do (tho iChat is the easiest to use, and only some of the other apps do video)
or for the service, you don't need .Mac, as a free AIM account will work, except with Windows Live as Microsoft does not have their network set up to work with other systems, and i don't think there is video on Live-compatible mac apps.

Re: New and a couple of questions
Well, I am super pleased with the response and would like to thank all of you that have responded to help me, UBER!
Thanks WalrusCP; DVPierce; ScifiterX; sturner; Mrreet2001; pottymouth; MacAddict4Life; FutureDreamz!
I understood everything and your right when I mentioned $99 for IChat it was actually $99 for .mac. I thought I had to have a .mac to use IChat but now I know different, woot!
dvpierce: "Leopard: Where the hell did you buy it? Call Apple and see if they'll sell you Leopard through the Up-to-date program."
I actually did call Mac and they told me that I had to purchase Leopard and it will be $128; that they have no responsiblity for the store selling a product that was not the most current. I understand that and accept it. But now after your up-to-date info. and a friend of mine I just found out he has Mac said there is a rebate program, I will be calling Mac back to get the scoop.
dvpierce: "4) You don't have iChat? Where the smurf did you buy your computer? Do you mean .Mac? Because then the answer is no."
I have IChat but got confused with IChat and .mac oops. Bought it a military store, I am in the Coast Guard.
I know now the MacBook I bought can do Windows because its a duo core and intel chip inside also.
Understand I can us IChat free with AIM, thanks.
Understand actual right click button, you can get the same function by holding the control button when you click.
Again understood all and thanks for everyones HELP!
You all are AWESOME and proud to be a MAC Owner.
Mac OUT!
