Web hosting, domaign names

Any recomendations on a free host? Pay hosts are not that expensive but I would not be using it for anything but teaching myself how it all works. For that reason I suppose it might be better to find one that is as similar to a pay host as possible.

Should I even bother with a domain name?

Re: Web hosting, domaign names

You don't really need a domain name.

If all you're doing is teaching yourself how it all works, why not host it all off your current hardware?

Re: Web hosting, domaign names

Because I am on a PC until I get a new mac, my connection is through a free community wireless and I want to learn how hosts work.

Wasn't this in a FAQ at some point?

Also, I think I vital part of "figuring out how hosts work" is paying for them.

Re: Web hosting, domaign names

Hmm... You may be right. I was just trying to find out if anyone had used a free host that they could recommend.

FreeDNS is what I use.

What do you mean by 'learn how hosts work' though? That's really general/broad...

Re: Web hosting, domaign names

I would like to learn the workflow (ftp , organization, etc..) mainly but also server side code.

I also want to be able to show my experiments to others so they can tell me how bad my code is.

Hm... FreeDNS only lets you point a domain name to an IP address, such as your own.

And there are no free hosting services like what you're looking for. You're going to have to spend some cash to get hosted externally. But hosting everything (say Apache + PHP + MySQL) on your Windows computer is still possible. Arguably you'd learn more because you'd actually have to configure things yourself. And you wouldn't need to pay anything extra either. Any sort of organization you do on your computer would be identical to something done externally. Heck, if you really wanted to make it authentic you could install an FTP server on your computer too!

Re: Web hosting, domaign names

Uh, dyndns.org will worth with any host, won't it? I doubt even a free web hosting service will roll IP addresses to break it, so inserting a static IP should work fine.

I used a free one at one point called portland.co.uk but they've since been bought and no longer offer a free service. If you can spare a few bucks you can certainly buy into really cheap hosts (I've used that one before - very good reliability and speed, just really small spaces).

but I'll second that if you're just hitting it up to figure out how things work then create a local, closed, environment. Setting it up will give you more insight into how it works than just using it.

google "a small orange" - they have hosting plans for like $25/year. great customer service, too.

Re: Web hosting, domaign names

I'll wait till I have a little more to upload and then go to a pay host. Thanks for the advice and links.

he means a dynamic IP address. Basically, when you dial-up your ISP you're going to get a new IP address everytime. that's why dynamic dns services are important to us poor students that host stuff from home wink
