Phantom Files
Ok, my friend got me into this torrent thing and it's kinda neat and all but now I have a problem. I have been downloading files directly to my external HD for a while and all of the sudden my computer pops the "startup disk is almost full" warning on me and for a second it shows 3 icons of my. Weird? So I go checking around and all the files did go to my external and not my internal yet still I'm losing internal HD space...hmmm.
I start snooping around. I find out many of the files are neither on the internal or the external. These "phantom files" (let me know if you have a better name) are taking up my internal HD space! And I can't get rid of them!
What's the weirdest thing is that I've used some of these "phantom files". I watched a video clip that was supposedly d/l to my external HD but now it's gone! I look in recent items and there it is! I can even play it! but i cant find it in finder or anywhere else! Where the crap is this thing?! I got so mad i ejected my drive. I can still watch them in recent items! If I go to "save as" I can see the directory still there for my External but only the folder where the video is supposed to be located. ARGH! Someone help me! I just want them to go away!

Re: Phantom Files

Re: Phantom Files
Open the file in QuickTime.
Hold Command and click on the file name at the top of the player window.
The directory listing you see will tell you where the file is. Presumably the other files will be nearby.

Re: Phantom Files
I only have panther 10.3.9 for my lowly 1.0ghz Powerbook G4. No spotlight.
But thanks Fracai! I cound out the problem. Somehow the torrent engine made a seperate file in the volumes. Mac HD/volumes/"ExternalHD". Anyone explain that to me? I want to delete the whole thing but im kinda scared to.

Re: Phantom Files
I doubt the torrent engine made the folder, you are not the only one to experience this quirk. Something similar happened to me a while back.
Go ahead and delete the folder, it wont hurt anything.

Re: Phantom Files
Problem solved! I got an app called Tinker Tool. It makes all the invisibles visible as well as some neat OS tweaks. I deleted all the invisible files and don't plan on d/l direct to my external until I know how to stop this from happening again. Thanks Guys!
