Warner Bros dumps HD-DVD for Blu Ray
Maybe this will help this ridiculous situation finally get straightened out.

It's over. Bring on the $39 burners and $29 spindles of blank discs!

Re: Warner Bros dumps HD-DVD for Blu Ray
I wouldn't mind paying $100 for a burner and $80 for media spindles, provided they actually produced a reliable disc that's compatible with ALL consumer Blu-Ray hardware. I don't want a repeat of the DVD burning fiasco.

I too hope Blu-Ray wins this war... and soon. A Blu-Ray burner would be a nice addition to my Mac.

Would have been nice if you had posted a link to this post in the original discussion before it was locked.

Paramount is allowed to pull out of it's contract with HD-DVD if WB goes first. I've heard rumours that they plan to switch as well now.

I'm glad it's leaning to Bluray, if only because I can pronounce it without sounding like I'm stuttering.

At least Hd DVD is self-explanatory. Blue ray always reminds me of "blue flamer".

Re: Warner Bros dumps HD-DVD for Blu Ray
I find it interesting that they went with the more expensive format. I guess the promise of better DRM was too much to resist. Now perhaps BRD players will become reasonably priced. This is also good news for Sony, it may save the PS3 as the only reason to buy one is because it is one of the cheapest BRD players. They sure as hell can't get anyone to make games for it.
It's a short-lived victory until downloadable content becomes reality.

I'm holding on to my pennies until I can only find one type of player at Best Buy. BluRay, HD-DVD, I don't care which one.

Well other than the fact that Betamax was superior to VHS in all aspects except price.
Bluray does not seem overly expensive compared to HD-DVD.

Re: Warner Bros dumps HD-DVD for Blu Ray
Blu-Ray has matched HD DVD in retail price because they if they cost more than DVDs, consumers won't buy them, not to mention being undercut by HD DVD. But Blu-Ray is more expensive to author and manufacture.

Do you have an HD set? If not, there really wouldn't be any point in being 'picky enough.'

Re: Warner Bros dumps HD-DVD for Blu Ray
I notice a difference and our set is only 720P. They also look better than HD over cable to be honest. The new menus and features are nice too. I'll consider adding Blu-Ray if they can get the cost of the players under $200, or the PS3 gets decent titles.
But be careful when buying a player as, like the PS3, configurations have changed. Older players won't be able to use newer features. The Blu-Ray spec is still a moving target.
