Boy am I glad we have those stem cells
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 … 091102.htm
An extraordinary new scientific study, which for the first time documents marked improvement in Alzheimer’s disease within minutes of administration of a therapeutic molecule, has just been published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.
I guess all those people saying that we needed embryonic stem cells to cure Alzheimer's disease were right.
I mean, the article doesn't say squat about using stem cells, but surely the article can't be accurate - that must have been how they did it, because that's why stem cell research was so important ...
To reduce elevated TNF, the authors gave patients an injection of an anti-TNF therapeutic called etanercept.
That must be a typo - they must have used embryonic stem cells.

And only embryonic stem cells, because no other kind could possibly be used.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Someday, when you need a new heart, and they can give you a human heart that is a clone of your own and was grown in a pig, and you can then have your donor for breakfast, you will be glad all this research was carried out, regardless of the fact that right now you are basing your opinions on listening to other people tell you how to think.

Or one of these days you will suffer a spinal cord injury and need stem cells to regrow your nerves in there.
Aricept is some awesome stuff (my grandmother is on it), but it can't cause new neurons to regrow.

Res, did you read the article or are you just going off of summary you linked to? Additionally, do you know what all of those things you quoted do? If so please share with the rest of us. All the scientists would be over joyed you did their job for them by providing the world with all the answers.

I did read the article.
I also googled it before I posted.
And sure - the trollish attitude isn't going to win me any browny points, but it still felt good given the emotional appeal so many give when arguing as to why we need this research, making claims that those who oppose it are getting in the way of things like a cure to Alzheimer's - especially those who used the ailment of Ronald Reagan recently to say we should be doing it despite the fact that for several years, many researchers have said it isn't the answer to that problem.

Who has ever said that embryonic stem cells was the only possible pathway?
Sheesh, just another strawman.

This is just another example of the classic bad logic that creationists use. They think that by trying to show one error or contradiction that the whole thing falls like a house of cards. By their logic since a study produced results about a disease without using embryonic stems cells therefore embryonic stems cells are not useful (same kind of bad logic that groups like PETA use to try to say that animal testing is universally bad/not needed). At this point I just want to see if Res has any understanding of what he claims to have read (because I'm not even buying that he read it at this point).

Sure.
I learned that the best breakthrough in Alzheimer's research has nothing to do with stem cells. Thus, the people who berated me and treated me like an un-compassionate monster for not supporting this research that was going to cure Alzheimer's were whistling air between their lower cheeks.

That statement is more telling of you than anyone else, Res. Nice to see that you at least are partially aware that you believe this is about you and not about anyone else. I was hoping you'd talk about the science or at least try to understand it and maybe start thinking about others. Guess that isn't the case.

So your question was about you and what you hoped, not about what I learned, even though that's what you asked.

I asked you a question to see if you had any understanding of the science behind the article. So yes, my question was to increase my own knowledge. If you can't distinguish between a question to increase one's understanding of others and an attack against those you perceive to think ill of you then I'm sorry.

Re: Boy am I glad we have those stem cells
You asked if I understood the science because you had an agenda behind the question, not because you had any kind of serious curiosity as to whether or not I understood the science.
I'm guessing there is probably only one person on this board who may have a shot at *really* understanding the science (though others may think they do) - and that's Hank.

Re: Boy am I glad we have those stem cells
So, Res. Why do you come here if you believe that everyone has some agenda to make you look bad? I'm really curious. I don't know what has led you to believe that everyone who disagrees with you is trying to trap you or otherwise control you. All I can say is that I'm not. I have nothing to gain from trapping you. I have no agenda. I'm here on this board because I like learning and helping others. This is easy when it comes to technology because people rarely have strong preconceptions that prevent them from having a reasonable discussion (now that the Mac and PC wars have died down). So yes, I admit that I find it hard to talk to you. I've tried explaining things and giving you links to primary sources and just asking you general questions (helping and learning, respectively). I could take offense that you see some sort of evil intent in my actions but instead I'm curious. I would like to know why. I don't presume that I can help you in this area (I can really only explain the various scientific concepts for you). So, would you help me learn or are you content with your version of the world?

I do not believe everyone in here has some agenda to make me look bad.
However, your question was not for the reasons you stated, that is clear.
I'm really curious. I don't know what has led you to believe that everyone who disagrees with you is trying to trap you or otherwise control you.
I don't believe that, and I'm curious what has led you to think I do.

Re: Boy am I glad we have those stem cells
So....those who advocate using stem cells for research are implicitly claiming that stem cells must be used in discovering new cures? That nothing new can come without the use of stem cells?
Are you even trying anymore? There's absolutely no logic involved here. Think, then post.
