i don't care if we use the embryonic stem cells, even though it's been proven time and time again we don't need those kind...

i'm just against federal funding for such a program.

I did think.
The problem is that those in favor of the research (and government funding of it) often don't, insisting that those of us with moral objection to it are essentially evil because it can be used for all kinds of groovy cures - including Alzheimer's disease - trying to play at emotion themselves rather than logic, wanting government funds to cross a moral line that a significant portion of our population do not think should be crossed, especially when there IS viable research that IS producing results that have nothing to do with harvesting embryonic stem cells.

Well, you've certainly scored a point against anyone who has insisted that cures will ONLY come about through the use of stem cells.  Way to go.

The fact that progress has been made without their use in this particular situation does not suggest that stem cells are not useful.

And as far as I can tell, all polling shows that a majority of Americans believe that such research is appropriate and should continue with less or no restrictions than exist now.

But do you think that the dems were not disingenuous with the smear that republicans were against stem cell research and furthermore, were  anti science? I heard that smear constantly. When in fact conservatives who were against fetal stem cell research had no problem with adult  stem  cell research, or various other kinds of stem cell research (which also, by coincidence, was the research that was actually producing positivie results, as opposed to cancerous cells).
The whole  antiscience smear is particularly obnoxious.Animal testing is science, are those who are against animal testing anti  science for exampe?
I think, in fact, some on the left did imply that those  opposed to fetal stem cell research were  preventing cures. Remember the Michael J. Fox ad a few years ago, or the assertion from John Edwards that "If we do the work that we can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve will get up out of that wheelchair and walk again"

Pure demagoguery. Because of course Bush did already setup a line of foetal stem cells, and because different kind of stem cell research had already been done and continued to be done while Bush was in office, which produced many positive results (many more than foetal stem cells). And most importantly because we weren't'  on the eve of a cure that would allow Christopher Reeve to walk, except for the fact that Bush deprived him of the chance  becuase of his evil plot to damp down on the stem cell research. We''re not at a cure yet, because its not a miracle cure. People still can't walk, spinal injuries are still devastating and a lot more work will still need to be done.

The dems came off like one of those informercial guys touting the wonder cure of stem cell research. And instead of the evil medical companies who could cure cancer but  dont because  its not profitable, rather than because they haven't  found a cure yet (as if they coudn't find a way to make a cancer cure profitable even if were made with all natural ingredients) we had the evil Bush. And stem cell research was the Coral Calcium that cures all ills. That's anti science.

Re: Boy am I glad we have those stem cells

What's all this talk about the Dems being on one side and the Republicans on the other?

Didn't the GOP control Congress when the bill was passed?

A majority of Americans approve of using embryonic stem cells in medical studies, according to a CBS News poll. Fifty-eight percent say they support stem cell research, while 31 percent disapprove.

Approval is higher now than it was last August; then, 50 percent approved and 31percent disapproved, but 19 percent had no opinion.

Republicans are less likely than Democrats to approve of it, although half do. Approval of stem cell research among Republicans has risen significantly since last year; then, 37 percent approved of it, now 50 percent do. Approval has risen among Democrats as well, although less dramatically, from 57 to 65 percent now.

Link.

Re: Boy am I glad we have those stem cells

Many on the right, myself included (as I think I've stated) do not have a problem with stem cell research using existing lines. The deed has already been done.

I do disagree with creation of new lines, especially government funding of project using those lines.

Stem cell research also includes adult stem cells, fallopian tube stem cells, and animal stem cells. It is not exclusive to embryonic stem cells.

I'm assuming their stats are for embryonic stem cells, though since it did not state it as such, I have no clue what questions they asked to get the stats in the article.

[snip]

By stating such you have in effect agreed to stopping federal government funding of stem cell research. Those existing lines are useless for further research, so Bush's "compromise" was nothing of the sort.

Re: Boy am I glad we have those stem cells

If you can find a womb for all those frozen embryos that get thrown in the trash everyday, then perhaps you have an argument.
Until then, the whole ban is an exercise in political hypocrisy at the expense of the greater good.
