My MBP is unusable - PLEASE help!!
This is not good
In the past oh, week or so, my MacBook Pro has been acting up, sort of. When I say acting up, I mean it's been giving me the beach ball quite a bit. Random times, but whenever I do anything remotely intensive (like launch an app), it beachballs. It does it when I switch apps that are open, etc.
I called AppleCare and talked to two different support guys over two different days. I've reset PRAM, repaired my HD, repaired permissions, booted in Single User mode, and done an Archive & Install of Leopard.
This is way not cool. Last night, I downloaded some photos into iPhoto 08. This morning, I opened iPhoto and all 7.2 GB of my library... GONE. It's all in the iPhoto Library folder when I say "Show Contents" but iPhoto itself can't see any of them. If I try to add them back, I get an error.
iTunes 7.5 will not open either since the A&I of Leopard.. Trying to open that will guarantee a crash. The beachball isn't as prevalent now, but everything hangs up and I can't do squat.
My firmware is up to date, all Software Updates are done, and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I'm going to call Apple back in the morning (Sunday) but things are not looking good. I'm a college student and this laptop is my life. I'm posting from a friend's Dell and can't go for too long without my machine.
I'm suspecting either bad RAM or a failing HD. The AppleCare guy this morning almost immediately denied that, saying it was "usually a software problem" and that most companies would want to try software issues first before "spending thousands of dollars" to fix my problem. Well smurf, sorry, this is under warranty and I also bought AppleCare. I need it fixed; I don't need excuses.
This is a MacBook Pro Core2Duo (2.2), with the stock-from-Apple 2 GB RAM and 160 GB hard drive. It came with 10.4.9 and now runs 10.5.2.
Ideas, suggestions, and tips are more than welcome. Please help me out! Thanks so much!

This. If the HD were bad, the archive and install would have failed.
(Although if it were bad RAM, the archive and install should have failed too...)
Hardware Test CD? Maybe download a BartPE disk and run the memory test app?
As far as your laptop being "your life," now would be an excellent time to invest in a backup solution. Back up everything RIGHT NOW. Then worry.
Even if they're both bad, replacing an HD and RAM would cost Apple, at worst, $200-$300 in parts, labor, and shipping. You could so the same thing yourself for $150 if it came to that.
You seriously need to get to an Apple Store and spend a few minutes going, "yup, did that" until somebody comes up with a good idea.
And in defense of the Applecare guy on the phone, 99.99% of the time, it's a software problem.

You should run Apple Hardware Test before calling AppleCare again.
Disconnect all external devices,
Restart your Mac while holding down the "D" key,
Follow on-screen directions,
After the test runs, if it displays error codes, write them down so you will have them when you speak with the Apple technician.
I had problems with my MBP and using this test I discovered that the left fan was not running. This caused my CPU to overheat, which produced spinning beach balls, slow response and application crashes.
Let us know what you find, if anything.

If the hardware test passes, then try backing up your data, wiping the disk, and installing fresh. It's possible that something is wrong with your account or with some library file that was retained during the archive and install.

One thing that strikes me about your post:-

Really? Is this a pre-release version downloaded from "somewhere"? A pre-release version that Apple deems not ready for the masses? Maybe that's the root of the problem.

Try making a new user account and see if the problem exists there as well.

Mmkay. Clarification / reporting time. Thanks for your suggestions guys.
I screwed up - it runs 10.5.1 (I thought we were waiting on 5.3 and 5.2 was out already, whoops).
Last night I removed each stick of RAM and the problem still persisted (I have 2x1GB), so I figured it was most likely not the RAM, unless somehow both chips failed at the same time.
I made a new user account and that account was zippy as normal. Therefore, it was something in my user folder. I dumped my user cache folder, and then took a peek in the Preferences folder. There was one that I didn't recognize (it wasn't a pref file, it was plain text) that when opened, had references to both iTunes and iPhoto, which had been acting up in the past few days. I deleted that as I figured it shouldn't be there. I also deleted all iTunes prefs (it wouldn't even open on my account but would on the test acct).
All seems to be working hunky-dory now (knocking ferociously on wood). I had to re-import my iPhoto pics as the XML file within the library was corrupted, but in hindsight it's not a huge deal compared to potentially losing so much stuff.
I do have a backup with Time Machine on an external drive. I'm not sure how to trust that yet, though... TM is still new and while it backs up regularly, this would have been the first time that I needed to access said backup, so I was semi-freaked there too.
Thanks so much for your help, folks. I'll keep posting if things get funny again.

I would consider doing a clone of your HD to the external now that it's all working, just so you have both the incremental TM backup as well as a master you can restore from if all hell breaks loose.

Hmmm....interesting. I would clone your HD as suggested and do a wipe and install fresh again if anything starts acting up. That way you know no little bad bits from the previous install stuck around.
