Registering a domain name...
I've never bought/registered a domain name, other than the freebie ones. For my film production, I planned on buying a domain name and hosting service in tandem.
But, I want to set up a personal website as well. I have a friend who's given me 2.5 gigs of server space. I'm wondering if I register a domain name (like www.myname.com), how would I use the server space he's given me. I basically only have FTP access. Also, the domain name is "www.myusername.hiswebsitename.com" and I don't want people to see that (If possible).
I hope that made sense. I'm kind of web design brain dead. I use Rapid Weaver or iWeb, and even then, I struggle to make something work.

Your friend will have to set it up on his server, but it's very possible. I'm familiar with using cpanel (ask him if he has it) in which case you simply click the "addon domains" tab to set it up.
I would recommend using GoDaddy to secure your URL.

Ok sweet. One more thing...If I buy a domain name + hosting package, and then buy another domain name, is it possible to use both domains with my hosting package
This is the setup:
www.mycompanyname.com - includes hosting
www.mypersonalwebsite.com - just the domain name, which I'd want to link to something like"
www.mycompanyname.com/personalwebsite
Is that possible? Again, sorry for being totally in the dark here. Hope this makes sense.

For a hosting package that will do that (let you host multiple domains from one account), I highly recommend HostGator at http://www.hostgator.com/
None of those ridiculous "it's only $4 a month but you must pay two years in advance" garbages. Month-to-month billing, no contracts, $8/month, more bandwidth and disk space than you could ever possibly use. Plus reasonably priced domain names with eNom's excellent domain control panel.

So I'm assuming I'd have to register a domain name somewhere else then (if i use hostgator). Correct? That's fine as long as its a simple process.

No matter where you register your domain, make damn sure that it is registered to you and thus becomes your property, and not that of the registrar. You'll be in a world of hurt, otherwise.
If you don't know for sure, ask someone who does for help.
