Bootcamp no like games!?!

I'm running leopard and have installed XP sp2 via bootcamp. Everything seems to be working properly except for games. I can install games fine but they just will not boot up for some reason or other. I keep getting an error message that the game had to quit unexpectedly and it asks me if I wish to send the error report to M$. What gives? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wolf

Could you be any more general? Game(s) you're trying to play, any specific error messages, error logs from the game(s), the Mac hardware you're using.

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

I have bootcamp for two reasons. To run Adobe FrameMaker and to run the games I like. No problems. What computer are you using, what are the specifications (RAM, video, harddrive space) and what are the games? We can't help without this information.

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

I'm on a:
Mac Pro 2.66
5 gigs of RAM
Radeon X1900 XT (PCI 1)
GF 7300 (PCI 4)
HD 1 = 250 gigs partitionned between my old tiger and Windows XP
HD 2 = 300 gigs Single leopard partition
2 24 inch Dell screens (190 XT) and one 23 inch HP (7300)

The games I have tried up to now are UT 3 and Fear (original + perseus mandate)

The only error I get (when I get one) is that the app had to quit unexpectedly and to send info to M$ "yes" or "no". Sometimes I don't even get an error message...it just does nothing at all. The system does not seem to be affected though. I'm at a total loss for ideas on this thing. I've reinstalled several times. All the updates to windows are installed... hope this new info can help you guys diagnose the problem better.

Thanks for your help.

K out of the two video cards which one do you want to use?

I'm assuming the X1900XT. Uninstall the drivers and reinstall the newest Cat. drivers from AMDATI. UT3 requires these to run. If that doesn't do it visit the Epic forums. Both ATI and nVidia have issues. There are specific tweaks you can try.

Could you be more specific on what UT3 is doing, rather not doing. There's a number of things Epic is trying to work out.

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

Thanks Levi, long time no see....uh..or chat! wink

Yeah, it's the very last problem UT.exe has encountered a problem. Thing is they talk about the Catalyst control center.... I don't have that. I just installed the drivers from Apple. WHERE and more importantly WHICH version of Catalyst should I download?

Also, I should point out again that ALL my games do the same thing. They just seem to what to load and then....well...nothing. And if I click on the game's icon again, I get that "insertgametitle.exe encountered an error and had to close" box. Really painfull! wink

Thanks,

Wolf

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

8.1 Cats
Download the full 30+mb first then:
Make sure you uninstall the Apple ones first.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Look for Apple/ATI software. May or may not be there.
Next Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager button
Expand the + next to display adapters. Right click on the ATI cards listed there and left click on uninstall. Reboot. After reboot XP might say found new hardware. Cancel that out. Launch new drivers. After the install reboot again.

It would be the same to update the GeForce card but using the drivers from nvidia.com. Click on download drivers.

And make sure Windows Update has your XP install fully updated. Specifically check that that you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed; Catalyst Control Center (CCC) needs that.

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

Well, I've installed Catalyst 8.1 after having installed .Net Framework and still no candy.... though now my three screens are working in XP which wasn't the case before. I guess that's a start. Yet none of the games want to boot up yet. I still get that very same error out of all of them. Even Apple is puzzled. What gives? Could it be a hardware problem? I mean I've got a new install of bootcamp, new XP, 10.5 new....geez everything is new on this rig...lol. I have to say the video card doesn't seem 100% with catalyst and another thing: Steam will not load.. whatever that is. Steam gives me the same error as the games.

I'm really sad this ain't working... I soooooo want to play these games...grrr! Well, perhaps you guys will have other ideas.

Oh! almost forgot: there is a second solution for UT3 requiring me to edit the ini file for UT... I don't think that is where the problem is since all other games are giving me the same problem but it doesn't hurt to be thorough, right? Sooo, where the heck is the ini file...haha?

Thanks

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

I don't have a UE3 game like UT3 installed yet, so I can't say anything authoritatively on the directory structure. Levi should be able to help, and I should have GoW PC running in a week if not sooner. FEAR isn't a UE3 game, but is challenging. Nothing that should give these results, tho; AFAIK it's not terribly buggy, tho I'm sure it's been patched a few times. I'm starting to think the problem is with the multiple videocards and monitors; that the system doesn't know which to use with what. It may need to be 'told' from the control panel, something like that. You might try disconnecting the secondary 1900 display for starters and see if anything will launch.

Installing the latest bimonthly build of DX9.0c wouldn't hurt esp. with UT3, and running DXDIAG from the command line should turn up any problems with DirectX after that. Levi will 'splain. wink

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

After some further thought, I have a hunch the problem comes down to both ATi and NV video drivers installed on the same system. Winders has never really liked that arrangement (and it goes without saying ATi and NV no likee each other).

If you can get away with "only" two displays under XP, I'd try uninstalling the secondary, NV drivers entirely. The 1900XT should be quite happy driving the other two, and you'll still have all three available in OSX.

You may still need to specify which display the card should use for games, tho. Others should know more there.

The XP Release Notes give some idea of the potential issues with just one card by one maker...

Known Issues Under the Windows XP Operating System
The following section provides a summary of open issues in the latest version of Catalyst™. These include:

After installing the graphics driver an error message may be displayed when attempting to launch DirectX based games when using an ATI AGP product. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31542

Call of Juarez: Setting the game level with Optimal Quality and high in-game settings may result in the game level being blank. Further details can be found in topic number 737-30591

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars may have corruption on the water and sky after increasing the game resolution. Restarting the game at that higher resolution or issuing reloadImages command in the game console corrects the corruption. This issue only impacts graphics cards up to the ATI Radeon™ X850. Further details can be found in topic number 737-29947

Lost Planet: Setting AA to either 4x or 8x may intermittently result in the game failing to respond. Further details can be found in topic number 737-28492

STALKER: Shadows may not be rendered properly when CrossFire™ is enabled along with AA being enabled at 4x and Full Dynamic Lighting also being enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31597

Connecting a CRT display device as the secondary display and playing a Blu-ray DVD using a Cyberlink player may result in no video playback if extended desktop mode is enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-30587

Connecting a Dual Link Panel to the on-board DVI port, followed by hot plugging a DVI display to the add-on DVI card may result in clone mode becoming disabled when rebooting the machine and the secondary display device remaining blank. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31166

The Catalyst Control Center menu option may fail to function when changing the skin from system skin to any other available skin. Further details can be found in topic number 737-30570

Setting the display resolution to 1440x900 or lower may result in corruption being noticed when playing a DVD title. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31168

Setting the desktop resolution to 1280x1024 and using PowerDVD to play an HD-DVD or Blu-ray title may result in corruption being noticed when using an ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 series of product. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31171

On certain products, changing display resolution while playing back High Definition content may results in instability. It is recommended to set appropriate resolution while playback is stopped. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31172

Cyberlink: Playing a DVD title on a system containing an ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 series may result in corruption being noticed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31173

Connecting a CRT display device as the secondary display and playing a Blu-ray DVD using a Cyberlink player may result in no video playback if extended desktop mode is enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-30587

Connecting a CRT display device as the secondary display and playing a Blu-ray DVD using a Cyberlink player may result in no video playback if extended desktop mode is enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-31599

I'd just get rid of the NV XP drivers. smile

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

Another thing you might want to try is uncheck the option to extend your display to the monitor you aren't playing on before launching your game (Right click desktop -> properties -> Settings -> Select the secondary monitor(s) -> uncheck 'extend my windows desktop...').  Many 3D game engines have enough trouble with multiple monitors attached to one card -- adding the complexity of an additional card from a different manufacturer is asking for trouble.

If all else fails, try pulling one of the cards.

I agree my next step if the drivers didn't work was to pull the 7300 and uninstall the drivers. I too have heard that ATI and nVidia don't play well in the same sand box. Before going thru the hassle of all that try the simple 'Disable' in Device Manager first. Go back to Device Manager, right click on the 7300 and select Disable. Still no joy then I think you'll need to remove drivers and card. I say the card too because every time you reboot XP will take longer to boot while it's messing with 'new hardware'.

Another thing there is an XP patch for dual core CPUs. Make sure you get it.

Bat is correct. Epic did change UT3's folder structure. No longer is everything in one folder. Don't mess with the .ini files in the Program Files > Unreal Tournament 3. Those are the defaults and are only used if the real ones get hosed. The ini files you want to play with are now in My Documents > My Games > Unreal Tournament 3. Make copies before messing with them or take notes on changes.

Re: Bootcamp no like games!?!

More TS help:
Many have said this helped getting UT3 to run.

Edit the UTEngine.ini which can be found in My Documents\MyGames\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config

For NVIDIA cards:
[Engine.ISVHacks]
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True

For ATI cards:
[Engine.ISVHacks]
DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=False

...and then...

[Engine.ISVHacks]
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=True

[SystemSettings]
OnlyStreamInTextures=True

But first patch XP and turn off/take out the GeForce. FYI after a fresh XP:SP2 install I normally have 250-300mb of patches to download. It'll take awhile.

Well, there is SP3 RC1. Books's had good results with it. Save many inividual patches.

Yeah, my only issue with SP3 RC1 is the HDMI Audio Output doesn't work on my HD3870, but that's not a big deal.

Actually it's a problem with the installation package itself, I'd need to modify the .inf file to accept SP2+, as opposed to SP2-only. But I can't find any easy to modify section that says 'VERSION=SP2'

That's one reason I cordially dislike long-distance troubleshooting. You have to assume too much... you don't even know if Gramps has been shutting down his Winders machine for years with the Power button. Power is On so Power is also Off, right? hmm

Grr... think it'd work if the card and 8.1 were installed on SP2, then SP3 RC1 installed and drivers rolled 'back' to 8.1 if superceded by whatever SP3 uses? I'd like 8.1 on my 3870.

Yeah, I'm sure it'd work. I'm not going to bother reinstall XP until SP3 is released on Windows Update though, not really worth it otherwise.
