How do I Remote Desktop to my mac?

I have an IBM Thinkpad laptop that I would like to use to remote desktop into my iMac G5.  Is this possible, and if it is what type of software do I need to do it?

Re: How do I Remote Desktop to my mac?

Hello,  The way I use to remote desktop ( i also use an IBM ThinkPad ) to my Mac at home is via a website called www.logmein.com
For full use you have to pay. ie use file transfers etc..  but just to remote logon to a Mac or PC  then its free.
You need to install its software onto the Mac 1st. Once thats done you just access it via there webpage enter your user name and PW.  Away you go.

You can add as many machines into this as you like..  The site is fully encrypted.

I know you can use VNC.  but i've always found this site useful as you can be anywhere with an internet connection and access your home Mac.

There is also a version for a PDA.  So you can use your PDA to access your machines.

Hope this Helps.

Mark.

VNC is better. Not that I've used logmein, but VNC is free (and open source).
You can also access it anywhere with an internet connection. There is a version for iPod/iPhone which I can say runs quite well over a LAN, and moderately well over a high speed internet connection.
http://www.tightvnc.com/download.htmll - there may be better links, however.

They say that the most secure computer is the one not connected to the internet.
That's why security experts recommend Telstra BigPond.

Re: How do I Remote Desktop to my mac?

I agree jb VNC is better as the connection is faster than logmein also file transfer etc..  as you said are free.  The only part of Logmein which is free is to remote connect to your Mac/PC. as I often use it from work, this is all i need as I can use FTP if i need to file transfer.
Unless things have changed since I used VNC I thought you need a VNC viewer which obviously allows you to connect from anywhere there is an internet connection,  but that would mean you either carrying a viewer with you or downloading it from the target Mac/PC.   Which if your in a internet cafe or something similar those functions are often turned off.  This is where Logmein works well as its web based.

I've taken a look at the link you provided as I thought I might try VNC again.. As I could do with a faster connection at times ( don't get me wrong Logmein performs well enough).

It appears tightvnc server is not Mac compatible only the Java interface.

Re: How do I Remote Desktop to my mac?

There are myriad of free, open source ftp servers and clients.
The vnc link I provided was for the OP with a thinkpad. For OS X, try http://www.redstonesoftware.com/product … index.html
Also, given that you need to be connected to the internet to access you computer anyway, and the vnc viewer is a small download, it'd have to be a pretty restrictive hotspot for you not to be able to download and run a vnc viewer.

Re: How do I Remote Desktop to my mac?

Just got Vine up and working on the Mac.  I'm using UltraVNC viewer from my T60.
Most internet cafe's and such like don't allow downloading ( the ones i've been to anyway ) due to the amount of people using them.  Viruses etc.... ( security reasons ).
This is why I use logmein as there are no restrictions.

Also if someone is not familar with network setups ie portforwarding etc..
Then Logmein is perfect as no setting up is needed.

One of the best FTP clients is Filezilla which i use all the time.
