Re: Favorite sounds

Mockingbirds calling at night, chickadees in late winter.
Mourning doves and loons are great too.

Distant thunder is always cool

Martin D-28, Hammond B-3, Fender Strats and Teles running hard through a vintage amp

My kids, when laughing / giggling

Ocean waves & Gulls -- well both "pier sounds" and "beach sounds"

I'm surprised you didn't mention the sound of your piper's engine. That has to be an awfully good sound to hear. After all, the lack of it means you're going to be doing some quick thinking quite soon.

Whose driving? Whose car?

I love my cats, and I love petting them, but I hate the sound of purring. It makes me feel like there's something in my throat and I can't breathe. On the other hand, I do love when they talk to me but not purring(but that's not so much the sound but the sentiment).

I also love the sound of rain. Downpours, drizzles, whatever. I love it. I love the white noise of the heater going during the night, or the wind blowing outside. Or of water running down a river.

And not that you were referring to music, but I'm almost always listening to music. In this order, I tend to prefer pianos, guitars, and drums or violins.

I think you might be the first person to ever tell me he hates the sound of a cat's purr, and I have to say, that reason is bizarre.  Did you have a near-drowning experience as a child or something?

-The sound of hundreds of frogs in the springtime around dusk

Re: Favorite sounds

As do I.  Do you have $600,000 USD (aka $3.42 CDN)?  That'll buy one for you and one for me.

(In response to Chicken, the sound of a Piper I'm flying actually gives me a headache.  I need to get a headset with Active Noise Cancellation rather than Passive, aka "Clamp The smurf Out Of Your Head")

Lastly, you don't actually want that airplane.  It has only one VOR, which sucks if you're going to fly anywhere without staring at a map every 5 minutes of the journey to make sure you're not off course.

Similar. Some VOR stations also are equipped with TACAN.

Re: Favorite sounds

I made an oopsie.  It has only one radio, which sucks even worse than having only one VOR.  You can't tell how many VOR's that has from that picture.

VORs with TACAN are called, simply enough, VORTACs.

Out of curiosity, Dan, what channels do you have up when you fly?

On the radio?
118.2 - Melbourne Tower (Use)
121.9 - Melbourne Ground (Stdby)
132.55 - Melbourne ATIS (Stdby)
123.3 - Practice Area (Use)
On occasion 122.725 - Valkaria UNICOM

I'll dial 110.0 into the top VOR, which is Melbourne.  The bottom VOR depends on where I'm going.

Re: Favorite sounds

Nah.  No reason to.  I'm flying my own airplane, and there's not a whole lot I can do about other people's emergencies.  If I had my own emergency, and time to switch, I'd put that in.

Re: Favorite sounds

If you ever fly near any military activity, it would be a good thing to dial in.

I tend to avoid military training areas.  I do fly over Patrick AFB from time to time, but then I'm on Patrick's frequency.

Indeed.  Truly awesome.  Especially if I know I'll be skiing upon it come morning.

I would add to the list a few of the sounds my wife makes at certain NSFW times.  But that's all I have to say about that.

Any sound my kids make, except for that whiny smurf my 3-year-old seems to think is appropriate right now.  Even crying is okay.  Except when it goes on for an hour in the middle of the night after we've already checked to make sure he's not hungry, not poopy, not uncomfortable in any way...  That crying just for the sake of crying can go away.  But any other sound they make is fine with me.
