Re: Best Historic Districts in North America?

Yeah, but compared to Europe and Asia, not a lot of western history here in North America, it's all pretty new..

It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Boston has a fairly nice historic district, IIRC.

Not so much a district as just cool little bits of history sprinkled through the whole city. Paul Revere's house for example. It's just, like, sitting there. Then there's the cool old cemeteries with centuries old headstones, surrounded by modern office buildings. I'm told the Freedom trail is the way to see this stuff but I've never walked any more of the trail than the bits between my favorite bars. shrug

Re: Best Historic Districts in North America?

Oh! And the harbor islands! I lived here 7 years before I got off my ass and went out there. Just a cheap ass ferry ride and then you can wander around some of the bigger ones with decaying forts and gun placements and whatnot. George's Island is all prettied up and they give tours so it gets crouded, but then there's stuff like Lovell's Island that's fairly wild and overgrowing but if you venture into the woods there's giant concrete bunkers and Dog knows what else. You can camp on most of these islands as well.

Downtown Detroit, Michigan: sporting a wonderfully dystopian, post-industrial, pre-Apocalyptic ambiance.

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

If you're ever down my way, Virginia is drowning in history. Civil war battlefields, Jamestown, Mount Vernon (a nice walk), Williamsburg (it's pretty fun), houses of other famous dead people...the list goes on for awhile. And I'm about an hour away from Washington DC, so there's all the monuments and whatnot. If you love history then yeah Virginia is for lovers.

On the other hand, it's Virginia.

lol Yeah there are some caveats to living here. But it's still a nice place to live. I don't have any huge complaints. Some of our state and local politicians need to lose their persecution complex, that's all.

Also, your traffic fines are insane.

Ah yes, one of my favorite gripes. I think I shared my misery with you all in a rant. However, the state's congress is considering legislation to repeal the abusive driver fines. They'll find a more subtle way to tick us off. Or pass something even more ridiculous. I'll be generous and say they'll do something half-way reasonable.

Like, let you use radar detectors?

St. Augustine, Florida, has some pretty cool history stuff, as does Charleston, South Carolina

As usual, everyone leaves out Philadelphia.  Why is this?

Elfreth's Alley is the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the US.
