DiskWarrior finally Leopard compatible (almost for current 4 owners))
Well, 4.1 is out but not quite ready for the free download promised to current Diskwarrior 4 owners but apparently will be very soon:
01/21/2008 - Leopard Compatibility
DiskWarrior 4 version 4.1 is now available for complete compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Version 4.1 offers additional repair capabilities including the ability to repair damaged directory hard links (a new feature of Leopard for Time Machine backups). DiskWarrior 4 version 4.1 is the only utility that can repair damaged links, directory loops and other problems that can happen with directory hard links.
Owners of DiskWarrior 4 version 4.0 will soon be able to download a free CD updater. When available, this free updater will allow you to create a new startup CD containing the updated DiskWarrior application. Please note that the new startup CD will start up the same set of Macs as your current DiskWarrior CD. Your new CD will not start up any Mac that your current DiskWarrior CD can not.

It's a good thing too, because I needed it badly to rescue the data on my old mac which decided to lock up and thrash the directory map exactly when I was backing up my data to move to my new imac!
Fortunately it worked perfectly, where TechTool Pro (which I borrowed) did not. Thank you DiskWarrior, you saved 3 years of my life.

DiskWarrior has long been OSX's disk repair standard. I usually run it every three weeks or so. I feel paranoid without it.

Maybe because you are. Running a disk utility is not without danger. I would not recommend running it with any frequency.

I think you may be correct if you were speaking of a notoriously buggy utility like TechTool. However, in my experience DiskWarrior has been 100% safe for the many, many years I have used it. Furthermore, it is better to catch and repair small issues before they snowball into big issues in my opinion. I see no issues with running DiskWarrior often. There's always the option to choose not to do the recommended repairs if the user feels they are sketchy, but I've never done this and have NEVER had ANY issues with DiskWarrior.

What are you saying?
I find directory errors to be not all that uncommon and if not corrected they can cause slow downs and develop into major disk corruption issues (obviously this is one thing DiskWarrior does well). Not that uncommon meaning every two months or so DiskWarrior will highlight in red directory issues. It may be one to a few. This has been the trend in my experience and is why I feel that it should be run every few weeks. Your milage may very but better safe than sorry.
DiskWarrior is to be run to prevent issues as well as to correct/repair severely corrupt directories. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

This is good to hear. I have both TTP and DW. I've had some bad stuff happen with TTP.

Seems like everyone has. Makes me scared to try it. I have DiskWarrior only and it is great, it fixes everything that DU can't (which is just about everything).

Your new CD will not start up any Mac that your current DiskWarrior CD can not.
This bothers me. Are there any newer macs that it won't boot up?

If you have directory errors etc. that often - you have a hardware problem. Sometimes random memory errors can cause that. Unless OS X just has a really crappy fragile filesystem.
You should only run a disk repair utility when you have damage.
It's not a bad idea to check file system integrity now and then - but doesn't OS X have something like fsck that does that?
Every 180 mounts or 6 months, it is run automatically on my Linux system at boot. I would be surprised if OS X doesn't have something similar.
Boot a repair utility when you need it. Let the OS take care of when to check integrity.

I think it means it will startup on ALL macs that your current CD will work with (including all current macs?), but not neccssarily older macs that needed an earlier version of DW and are no longer supported.

This is how it was with their last free upgrade.
This means that any Mac you used the 4.0 on will work with the 4.1 update and any Macs you didn't use 4.0 on the 4.1 update won't work on those.

So what about the brand spankin' new machines that require Leopard? (We've had some new Macbooks come in at work that won't accept our Tiger image. Leopard gets deployed to sites starting this spring.)
