Need some advice please

I just purchased a NewerTech ministack "NAS", most likely due to a limited understanding of what I actually need, and networking in general. I have several macs running on my network, and need a new server solution.

The problem is that I have been using a SnapServer for about a year, and it hasn't been very reliable.  The "server" drive icon disappears (unboots) sporadically, and this frustrates my staff (I have five employees). I'm hardwired via ethernet to each office, but also have an airport extreme for the laptops (2). The Airport is hooked to an ethernet 16-port switcher, which feeds the rest of the network and printers.

The management software I use requires CONSTANT:confused: read and write from all of the computers (which the NT Ministack can't do apparently), so I guess I made a mistake in that I need a "real" server instead of the one I just bought.

Your suggestions in my network set up would be much appreciated!! BTW, I want to run it in Leopard if I can. Thanks again!

Re: Need some advice please

Welcome to the MacLife Forums!

What you may have run into is that there is no reliable Leopard driver for the NewerTech miniStack NAS drive, which according to Other Worlds Computing's page for the 250GB model a Leopard driver is expected in 1Q of 2008. There is an alpha version of the driver on this page, so it does come with considerable cautions (and not something I would want to trust in a working business environment).

Since its USB port still works you could connect that miniStack NAS drive to a new AirPort Extreme BaseStation, at least until the Powers-That-Be iron out the problems with the NAS driver for Leopard.

Alternately you could share that drive through USB via one of the Macs on your network, with the understanding that performance on that particular Mac will be somewhat degraded due to it having to handle the traffic to/from the drive.

FWIW, I've had my airport disk kinda flake out under heavy load too.

Not sure why. Some day, maybe I'll sit down and figure it out.
