Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

Hi All,

I would like to make a complete copy of my hard drive that I have inside my MacBookPro, (2ghz Intel Core Duo) reformat the internal hard drive, split into two partitions, and then put the copy back onto the internal drive.

Will I be able to make that happen without too much trouble?

Any advice is most appreciated!

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

Do you have another drive to copy it to?

You could use Boot Camp to partition it on the fly, but I'd back up first anyway. Then just reformat the partition Boot Camp creates to a normal Mac OS partition and proceed as normal.

Boot camp, eh?

I thought that was for that Windows OS I've heard about, but if it'll do the job...

so, I won't have to remove all the data from my internal drive if it works?  (and, yes, I'll back-up anyway)

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

If not for Boot Camp, why are you partitioning? I only ask because I was one time foolish enough to think partitions would somehow be useful for organizing my data. hmm

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

I have to run an old version of Tiger with Logic Pro and my audio hardware.  My Mackie firewire interface doesn't work reliably with anything above 10.4.7, so I'll dedicate one partition just for the earlier OS and my audio work.

It'll be just the bare-bones OS stuff and Logic Pro.

On my other partition, the latest and "greatest" feline hoo-ha.

FireWire is broken in the SW updates? that's unusual...

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

Apple's FW ain't broken.  It's Mackie's stuff that ain't "fixed."  Small difference, but a significant one for me.

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

Mackie tells me their hardware has an interface bug that doesn't allow it to work reliably on any OS over 10.4.7 er no...8.

to wit:

"We have found that this update will break functionality, and recommend NOT to update until further notice. We are actively involoved with Apple in getting a resolution to this promptly.
Thanks!"

und:

"There appears to have been a change in the Core Audio Firewire driver beyond OS 10.4.8 that is causing instability. We are working on this matter directly with Apple to try and get to the bottom of the problem."

So they sez to me.  Apparently, they are taking their time working with Apple...

Splained?

It's a company that makes audio hardware.

http://mackie.com/

He has a Firewire-based audio interface - a very expensive one, more than likely.

He uses it because it would be very expensive to replace.

Sometimes, you have to use the right software for the hardware you have.

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

Indeed.

Thus, my desire remains to partition my hard drive, so while it may not fit the rationale for some users, it does for me.

Cheers.

Re: Copy, Clone, Replace System Disk

If you have 10.4 installed on the internal drive, SuperDuper should be able to take it for a round-trip without any problems.

If you have 10.5 installed internally, using Disk Utility may work, but I'm not at all sure how it likes restoring to a different-sized partition than the image was created from.

Not a problem. Internally, they all work the same.
