BioShock PC widescreen
The WSGF has a report up on the title game. Short form is
The game natively supports widescreen resolutions but is VERT-, so our friend Racer_S has supplied an FOV hack to allow you to change your FOV setting manually. (Thanks Racer_S, you did it again!)
You can obtain this hack here:

UPDATE:As of version 1.2, the hack SUPPORTS DX10.
Method 1 Native
VERT-
You can simply choose your resolution from the Graphics Options.
If no one else does it, Booksley will be glad to elaborate on the VERT-/HOR+ difference, so I can get some sleep- if he's out of Fort ImacBox yet (i.e. has found a copy of Rock Band in Canadia).

Re: BioShock PC widescreen
I think that means that the wide screen is true widescreen but rather a vertically compressed fullscreen image.
If that's the case, HOR+ < VERT- < True Widescreen. Compressed images suffer from distortion but stretched images suffer from low resolution and distortion.

OMG, I feel violated having successfully played it through a few times and failed to care.

There's no "true widescreen" because when you're playing a game, you're just looking through a camera lens that be modified infinitely.
The two methods of creating a widescreen view are typically HOR+ and VERT-, with HOR+ being the better method because you can actually see more compared to a 4:3 screen with the same resolution. Also, both methods don't compress/stretch anything. It's like using the Crop tool in Photoshop for VERT-. And adding extra pixels to the canvas for HOR+.
Basically, HOR+ > 4:3 > VERT-

Re: BioShock PC widescreen
Heaven forbid they actually change the aspect ratio to make it truly widescreen and make sure that their HUD elements are positioned relative to the side of the screen so they don't get stretched. (from the descriptions of HOR+ and VERT-, it sounds like this is equivalent to HOR+)
It amazes me how man games don't really support widescreen effectively with widescreen monitors much more common. It isn't really that difficult as long as you plan a little ahead and make sure you aren't retarded and hard-code the aspect ratio. The HUD is a little more difficult, but you can either leave it stretched (not too bad) or position things relative to the edges that they are closest to in order to dynamically re-position the HUD whenever the aspect ratio changes.

Re: BioShock PC widescreen
My biggest issue with this game's WS implementation is that in WS it feels cramped. I dunno if that was the intention, but compared to the normal aspect ratio it really does feel like you can see less.
Without having ever seen the normal aspect ratio version I thought WS was cramped. I'm glad they did this and I hope something finds its way to the xBox version soon.

Don't forget Stretch, sadly common, where the screen info of 4:3 is simply mapped onto 20% more pixels horizontally, distorting the aspect ratio (circles become flattened ovoids, etc). Beyond Good and Evil is degraded this way- watchable, playable, but distorted.
WS is Native (settable in-game, no hack), but... off.

Re: BioShock PC widescreen
Addendum: you get the above (Stretch) when the dev fails to adjust the FOV for the wider screen for some reason- e.g. Halo PC can be run wide by setting resolution and refresh at the command line or equivalent shortcut property edit, but without an (available, happily) FOV hack, it will stretch.

Re: BioShock PC widescreen
I should address this before the topic gets too old.

This was discussed early on, and there seems no hope it will be addressed on the 360.
