MacBook Pro Speculations?

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/03/new … inventory/

Anyone have anything else to add?  Do you guys think it will have a design revision and look like the Macbook Air?

Also, Does this mean that the current gen Macbook Pros will not be able to swipe and pinch with a software update?

It is probably possible that Apple puts more gestures into the older Macs, but yeah, the new ones will have a bigger and smarter pad.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

I really hope they don't go and redesign the whole thing... I mean really, the current aluminum case design is sound, strong, proven and very pretty tongue

Its how old now,... 4 years at least? (since the PB) and the competition still cant touch it.

I can see another bump to whatever the current Intel chipset is, yet more RAM possibilities, mercury free displays (ala MBA) and probably the MBA style track pad.

Off topic, I know... but what I would love to see is a more capable audio system. I mean really, built in sound on MBP's sucks. I know there's not a lot of room under there, but can't they take some design cues from the MBA to shrink things up some more?

I really want an extra pair of speakers at the very least... preferably a larger more capable set than what is currently shipping.

Oh, and I want a REAL video card... lol.

But I think it will probably remain much the same... thankfully! big_smile

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

So the reason it's taking so long for a redesign of the Pro case is because Apple is having a hard time coming up with a replacement?

I don't see anything changing beyond the new Core 2 Duo Penryn lineup and multitouch.

Same, thats the next logical jump.  Won't be to long before they do that to the MacBook as well.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

The sad part is the list you end up of things you won't be getting:

Quad core or Core 2 duo extreme X9000 proc, 512 Mb VRAM, Blu-ray, HDMI out, 400 Gb Hard drive. I understand that putting the extreme proc in there is just too extreme, but it sounds fantastic.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

All they need is a MacBook with an aluminum cover and larger screens. Keep the same design and cram the Pro innards into it.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

Well, where to begin... the "Extreme" CPUs crank out loads of heat and won't work in a thin-and-light. VRAM is one area where I wish Apple would quit being so damned stingy, just make 256MB the standard already. Blu-Ray would be nice, but it's not really required and is expensive. Even value leader Dell charges $500 for a slot-loading Blu-Ray drive on the XPS 1530. Apple would rather you rent HD movies on iTunes. HDMI out can be accomplished via an adapter. HDMI cannot support a 30" display, dual-link DVI can. Larger hard drives would be nice.

Excuse me while I go get a bowl to drool in wink I wish there were aluminum MB's with a real GFX card. I might actually go nuts if we ever saw one.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

the GPU must must must have at a minimum of 512 megs of vram. I'm sick of the low amount they put in. The penryn chipset is a good one, and i think a quad core could be shoved in the mbp. I could see that in the highest end one.

The Macbook Pro doesn't need 512MB of VRAM. It's a waste, because the 8600M GT isn't powerful enough to run games at resolutions where 512MB of VRAM is actually used. And FWIW, in Windows XP/Vista, Windows will carve a chunk of main memory equal to the amount of VRAM on-board for use by the GPU. Now that being said, the MBP definitely could do with 256MB of VRAM across the board.

Personally, I think the updated MBP will see a multi-touch trackpad, 2.4/2.6Ghz dual core in the 15", and 2.6Ghz quad core in the 17", and larger standard hard drive sizes

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

Most notebooks have integrated graphics. Even ones with discrete graphics that advertise 512MB of VRAM don't have 512 dedicated. They use TurboCache/HyperMemory cards that have 128 or 256 dedicated, then use system memory to make up the difference.

Unfortunately, to get a beefier card, Apple would need to create a thick, heavy notebook - like the gaming laptops you see on the PC side. The 8600M GT is probably the best GPU Apple could cram into a thin and light case.

I don't see any evidence of a quad core mobile chip for the MBP. And if there is, the it would not be limited to the 17", which most people who need that power think it's too big and heavy.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

I don't think an aluminum MB will be a possibility...because they came out with the Air.

What I would like to see though is maybe a 8400 or some other dedicated graphics card for the Macbooks.  I like the size, but integrated just BLOWS.

This will probably be a small revision that mostly just incorporates the Penryn processors.  Here's some small extras it will probably have/what I'd like:

Expected:
2.4/2.6 Penryn Processors
Multi-Touch Trackpad
Larger Hard Drive
Would like:
All of the above, plus magnetic latch, possibly a 1680x1050 display, 256 memory all around, HDMI

I'm hoping the design doesn't change to look like the Air, I really like the current keyboard and am not really a fan of the chiclet keyboards.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

I want a 15" with the 1680x1050 screen and the MacBook's ease of upgrading.

It would be my next computer. I want a small screen that rivals the ACD I have on my desk.

Re: MacBook Pro Speculations?

Here's my predictions......

Power7 processor.

Okay, no.

Quad core processor in the top o' the line model at first, then in all of them shortly after.  Video cards will have 256mb all around.  Multitouch trackpad.  Case will remain the same.

I don't think the case will be redesigned until the Mac Pro is redesigned.  I don't see Apple going away from the aluminum look for a while, so that case is here to stay...which is good...I like it.  Bluray isn't going to happen I don't think....not for a long while at least.  When it is done, it will be a burner, like the setup in the Sony FZ180.

I agree with the burner comment. Case design might take a while cause they're too busy putting Quad2 Core in there.

Which Intel chip is that, and when is it being released?
