Linksys can't connect wireless

I have a linksys router that i have 4 pcs hooked up to. I just recently bought a macbook pro. I tried to connect wireless and it was flawless the first day. 2nd day it wouldn't connect. after farting around with it for 3 hours it connected again. all i did was remade a connection. I created a location and tied the wireless connection to it. next day nothing. the laptop can't seem to stay connected. i updated my firmware and changed connection type from wep to wpa hoping that would fix it and it didn't. everytime i do a network diagnostic it asked for password and i type it in correctly and it still can't connect.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP, I was startingn to love my mac!!!! cry

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

What obstructions do you have between the router and your Mac?

Will it find your network for selection?

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

what encryption is it using?
I know with my old D-Link I had to downgrade to WPA (from WPA2) to get the Mac to work with it.

I'm using WPA2 personal with AES, which works fine.
try that, but only if you have a computer connected directly to the router.

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

Try this:
Launch System Preferences->Network -->Show: Airport, and in the box click on the plus sign, it will open a dropdown pane.
fill in the info for the router
The Mac should remember now.

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

I created new airport connection, gave it network name, wpa shared key it, self assigned ip (like before) shows connected but still no internet.

you mean as in: after a while your internet drops to nothing, while you are still connected to the router, and it seems as if only reconnecting to the router solves that, but part of the time the router refuses to connect you, and sometimes doesn't even show up in the airport menu?

EDIT: oops, I forgot to hit send

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

here's what happened and is happening. i have a wireless b router. first time i got mbp up it sensed my wireless i tried to connect at the startup of the new laptop and it gave me error on network password (which it shouldn't). so i then made a connection through airport. it connected first day and next it was dead. after messing around the next day it connected, next day dead. so after reading bunch of forums and fixes i upgraded firmware on linksys and it only has wpa shared key with tkip. no other options are available. i am about to go buy the linksys wireless g and maybe it will have other encryption options. but now i am so frustrated. i love my new mac (as a new mac user) and just got my adobe cs3 package and the thing is useless for wireless.

my question is this what is the best router for wireless connection and how do i connect. i heard people turn off security (wep or other) and it worked but that is not an option for me. or if i possibly could have a fix for what i have now.

What is your wireless setup and how has it worked for you?

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

Either the router is bad or the Mac is bad.

Try the Mac at a different location (friend's house or Wi-Fi HotSpot).  If the Mac connects OK you have a bad router.

If the Mac can not connect to a different router you have a hardware or software problem with the Mac.  Take it to an Apple Store and let them fix it.

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

I had a Linksys router model WRT54G I think it was, that would mercilessly drop the MacBook every so often, sometimes several times a day without any pattern. After countless options changed & forums visited, finally changing the Channel on the router to 11 fixed it. Weird.

Now I'm on a Fios supplied router and not a single issue.

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

I just bought the belkin router. the weird thing is that i connect right away with the connection unprotected. i don't really want to do wep and but network on apple seems to have something up with wpa2 with tkip + aes connection. i am trying to go this route for security but mbp is not liking it. i am currently unprotected and downloading latest os update to see if there are any fixes there.

Re: Linksys can't connect wireless

Since you have a combination of PC and Macs (well, a Mac) on your network, you should limit your WPA/WPA2 password to only alphanumeric characters. PCs (running either Windows or Linux) and Macs handle many characters beyond the base set of alphabetic and numeric characters differently, so a password that is acceptable by one set may not be so by the other. You can increase security by lengthening the password like, say, using the lyrics of a favorite song, capitalizing every word, and substituting a number for each of the spaces--this way you could get to the 63/64-character length quite easily.

I should add that the alphanumeric limit should be applied to your LAN's name, too.

Another thing you could use is Steve Gibson's Ultra High Security Password Generator where you can get several passwords of 63- or 64-character length (and new ones are generated each time the page is downloaded, and since it is transferred to you computer via a secure https connection the contents cannot be sniffed) and cut-n-paste one of the alphanumeric versions. Gibson is the tech guy responsible for Security Now which he co-hosts with Leo Laporte, so Gibson knows about security.
