Lag on OS 9 start up
Not exactly sure what ius causing it, but I've got similar lags when starting up OS 9. What I can say is that on a clean boot the lag isn't there, but when I boot with all my extensions/startup stuff enableb I get the lag. My suspicion is that during startup something requires a little bookkeeping time to get istelf up & running and it's probably the same for you. Never had the time/urgency to find out exactly what program(s) are requiring the extra time (especially since I only tend to reboot during a crash or when switching between 9 & X)

Out of all the OS9 Macs I have (about four), only one never did that.
It was also the only one on which I kept the default desktop picture.
The one where it was most noticable was the G3 on which I made use of the option to randomly select a desktop picture on startup.
I don't know if that's the cause or not, but its worth checking out.

most times the lag at startup are because you have a server in the Server folder inside System Folder
Yep, these created a massive lag for me too.
Also, if you're not using Ethernet, turn that off in the Extensions Manager.

one thing that also slows down startup is the ram test. turn it off.
You need to hold down the option, and apple key down while you open the memory control and turn off the ram test. this will help.

In my experience these lags (you can move the cursor around, but nothing else) are sometimes caused by having your chooser set to automatically mount an external file server on startup. If the fileserver is not on or disconnected, the OS will try to find it for about 30-40 seconds. If you uncheck the "automatically mount" box, while connecting to a fileserver, this annoying lag should go away.
