Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
This will probably get moved, but it shouldn't. There has been so much sour puss whining about Apple dominating the discussion in this forum, that it has killed this place. I mean just look at the post counts and active threads around here. Pathetic. I can understand it too. Who wants to discuss everything Apple when there is so much BS sour grapes around here, and anyone who posts anything positive about immediately gets slammed with a bunch of fringe, frantic opinions. It is worse than the days where there were trolls.
Mac|Life forums have died. Sad.

No. Mac|Life is as it always has been.
It is MacAddict that has died.

Exactly. You were talking about the "tech news" forum, or old circuit board, right?

Nothing?
I would say it is a combination of the poor interface of these forums, combined with the sour attitude of the few who are left.

The interface is a different issue than you mentioned in your OP. You made it sound like the discussions were the only problem on these forums.
I'm not going to get into a discussion about the problems on these forums. It's been done too many times over the last 6 months. If you're unhappy here, find somewhere else to post. Oh, and you might want to take a look in your PM inbox.

yeesh.
Would you like to clarify this response because on the surface it looks like you're jumping to conclusions about something you know absolutely nothing about.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
This is my opinion. I don't want to get anyone riled up.
I don't think we can blame this entirely on Apple decorators. They have always been around, and they always will be. Apple could release a million perfect products and someone would be upset. As it is, they are releasing pretty good products that get even more people upset.
I think the real reason people leaving is because these forums aren't being tended to anymore. I do not mean mods and whatnot, because they're doing fine (I think). But there are alot of places to post that are similar to MacLife Forums, that have people in charge of making/implementing changes and improvements, who actually care.
It's obvious from the months of being ignored that this is no longer the case. I think that is why people are leaving.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
I think part of the problem is the lack of news (positive or negative). I don't see very many anti-Apple discussions, in fact. I just see a lot of insignificant ones. For example, I was very recently engaged in a discussion with Frankly over the version number difference between the Finder and OS X. The discussion was neither positive nor negative -- nor was it particularly useful.
Other than that, the 10.5.2 thread seems very positive. I personally loved the update, and a few other people thought now was a good time to move to Leo.
I'm also very excited about the death of HD-DVD. On-line movie distribution is lightyears away from becoming practical (at least for me), so this is a good thing, and the industry will certainly benefit from this as well.
The Apple Product Cycle thread was hilarious. Very upbeat tone.
Other than that, the tone seems pretty neutral --but again-- because of the lack of interesting news.

I agree with Mr. T.
Not that I've ever been much of a poster, but very often I just have nothing to add to the subject.. The old debates, I'm tired of and don't mix in, news is info, and well.. Either I (or us) am worn out of reaction.. or don't have the same gut-feeling with the underdog.. Apple isn't the same either, they have grown pretty cold as a corporation.. (negativity Cza?

Hehe. I know who Czachorski means. (Just joking)
The MacAddict forums lost a lot of people when the massive crash occurred and even more when it moved to punBBS.
Personally this is still my home BB, but it's a shadow of its former self.

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
I don't see the problem. When I have a question it gets answered here quickly and very well. When I want to find out something new about Apple, it's here. I don't know if complainers tend to want to live inside these forums or not, but aren't we pretty much just typing back and forth to each other over the net? Where is the weakness if the people here know what they are talking about?

Re: Apple Detractors Have Killed This Forum
I certainly hope this thread doesn't mean Cza's getting ready to check out.
I've also noticed that the board's not hoppin' the way it once was. I personally miss the MacAddict name. Even if it's not as good a way to sell magazines, I suspect it's far better at attracting an internet bb community. So maybe the name change should be included in our list of possible explanations for the decline in bb activity.
At any rate, you've long been one of my favorite posters on these boards, Cza, and as a regular reader but infrequent poster I've often found my opinion's already been voiced clearly by you. So stick around!

I dunno, maybe it's because I'm not a forum veteran, but I don't think this forum is going downhill. Maybe the posts aren't fast and furious but I like the sense of community. I do like coming here. Even if I'm getting toasted to a crisp in MiniThink, at least I get a coherent reason why. I've found that the folks here are helpful and really interesting. I've learned stuff here I wouldn't have learned otherwise, not just about Macs but about life too. Thanks everyone.

Moreso than a lot of places there is though. I used to post vehemently at VWVortex and there was absolutely no sense of community, mostly everyone was just jerks to each other. Even the ML forums in their weakened state are much better.

I'd like to agree, but i don't. Just take a look at this thread.
Of the 24 responses, 15 are from current or former mods and some of those posts are from the same people. Of the remaining 9 posts, there are 8 members that posted bringing a grand total of 17 different posters that actually care enough that the forums have been around 9 years to respond to that thread.

That is a good point. I guess I haven't been around long enough to know what it was like back in the day. I guess all I'm saying is that it could be a lot worse.

Agreed. At least we do try to be nice to each other.
I've tried aquarium forums where there seemed to be a gang mentality and the game of the day was to beat up n00bs who came looking for advice. Calling someone a "smurfing Idiot" because they put a baby oscar in a 10 gal tank because they didn't know any better... that's just uncalled for. I am certainly no tech support guru, but I know that people like pottymouth will help without being judgmental or calling people bad names.

So are we talking about a simple matter of maturity here? Is Cza just saying that a bunch of kids with chips on their shoulders are the majority here? If so, that sucks, because I realized long ago I have no time for that.
