Introed at $199, later $179, now permanently reduced another $50 MSRP in US and Canadia.

It's been a running gag hereabouts for some time, as, say, here.
Everyone knows nothing much happens in Canadia anyway... oh, wait, this just in: more snow.

Ahem, my birthday is at the end of March.

Serious note: Now that's a tempting price point. Wonder if it still includes the free HD-DVDs.

Yup. They mentioned that in the article. But we never read the article, we just read Bat's snippet and discuss that

I maybe would've bought one for $80 at Amazon when they were running that promotion when this was first announced... but I would really rather wait until this is over and I can buy just one piece of hardware and be done with it.

Why can't we just have 2 formats?

In defense the lil FYI on the free HD-DVDs is in the comments and not the article. I don't always read the comments too. But as proven here I don't always read the articles either.

Geez, you folks are never satisfied. If the snippets don't give you all you want, you start trolling for birthday presents.

I see 'journalistic' integrity not only is its own reward, but supplies ample blackmail material. (Not that I'm short of that either, Mr. LLe- 'I'm married so never see money but play a new $60 game on XBL every week or two' -viathan
).
While $129.99 is the new official price, some retailers are offering the Xbox 360 HD DVD player for even lower prices. Best Buy is offering the player for a low $119.99 on its online site.
For night owls that were browsing the Internet early this morning, Amazon had the peripheral on sale for $79.99 with free shipping for a short period of time according to Engadget.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD player ships with an Xbox 360 universal remote and a copy of King Kong on HD DVD. Users can also hook the player up to a Windows-based machine with the proper drivers.
In addition to the new $129.99 price tag, customers are still eligible to receive five free movies via mail-in rebate [PDF] courtesy of Toshiba. The selection of movies won't set any hearts racing, but free is free.
I guess that oughta do 'er.

Ummm that's my allowance...yeah that's the ticket.
C'mon now I got two games for Christmas (Mass and Assassins). The kids got Viva ($20) and I just picked up Condemned because CC has it on clearance for $9. Hey if a good game hits the < $19.99 point I’m all over it. Quake 4 would be on the shelf too if there were any in stock (another $9 @ CC).
CoD 4 is on sale this week for $37 just might pull the trigger on that because I keep getting asked to play.

In a related story, Netflix has announced that they will only carry high definition movies in Blu-ray format.
Netflix press release wrote:
As part of the transition to Blu-ray, the company said it will acquire no new HD DVDs but that its current HD DVD inventory would continue to rent until the discs' natural life cycle takes them out of circulation in the coming months.

Re: 360 HD-DVD drive now $129
Yeah, I wept. HD-DVD is dying faster and faster these days, and I just bought my 360's HD-DVD drive last fall at the $179 price point.
Oh well, even at that price point it was a good deal, and I can still rip that apart and put it in a computer. Maybe I'll get a Blu-Ray burner at some point to convert my HD-DVDs to Blu-Ray.

Yup. Meanwhile perhaps NV (you are getting the 8800 GT?) will release something like AVIVO's transcoder to speed that up, and drives will get cheaper over time. Meanwhile 4 cores should stand you in good stead there.
For those without, I see this speeding MS' release of a standalone BD drive for 360. It seems to have been foreseen & negotiated in advance. Of course that'll mean more $.

This might be it for HD-DVD:

Wal-Mart to Give HD DVD the Boot, Sides With Blu-ray
The HD DVD Promotional Group is going to have a hard time recovering from today's announcement from Wal-Mart. The enormous retail giant announced on its Check Out blog that it has chosen Blu-ray as its high-definition platform of choice.

Also, it looks like Toshiba might pull the plug on HD-DVD themselves shortly:
The Hollywood Reporter wrote:
Toshiba is widely expected to pull the plug on its HD DVD format sometime in the coming weeks, reliable industry sources say, after a rash of retail defections that followed Warner Home Video's announcement in early January that it would support only the rival Blu-ray Disc format after May.

Oh yeah, there's no doubt the fat lady is warming up in the wings. Format wars are all but over and Michael Bay is being insufferably "I told you so,' suffering memory lapses where he equivocated.
Even with the majority of BD movie buyers being PS3 owners, the studios and retailers (incl. Best Buy) have swung too muchly behind BD for the mo' to stop. It's a question of support for existing inventory for existing HD-DVD owners. Fortunately I am not one, so for me it's actually kind of... peaceful.

Same here.
I couldn't really care less which side wins so much as there's a clear winner and one side dies off because of it.

Toshiba Officially Surrenders in HD Format War

They'll still be providing support for the 730,000 players that are out there already (including 300,000 XBox 360 add-on drives), but they'll have stopped manufacturing and shipping players by the end of March.
They're still "committed" to "collaborative relations" with their content partners, but as Toshiba was the only company making players, it's effectively over.

At least this should accelerate release of BD drives and accessories for all. Good timing, since blue lasers and other BD-critical parts have been getting much cheaper lately, making Blu components more affordable, sooner.

Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD Add-on Gets The Axe
Officially discontinued.
Like Toshiba, M$ will provide standard and warranty support for the foreseeable future.
DailyTech seems to think that there will be a forthcoming "fire sale" on remaining shelf units, so if for some unfathomable reason you REALLY want one, keep your eyes peeled for even lower prices.
