Output dropping
Looks like my output will be dropping now. The PC that I had humming in the background with FAH decided to bite the big one yesterday. Hopefully this means I can build an Intel Quad system, but perhaps not. Will the Quad be able to use all four cores for FAH?

Re: Output dropping
Incorrect info is adjusted to be red. See Onanum's post below.
I am pretty sure in this case you will be running 2 instances of Folding. On my iMac Core 2 Duo, there are 4 "fah1_core.exe" running. This is one instance of Folding in the SMP version.
If you get just one new or slightly new Intel Mac or Intel PC running, your points per day should go up to 500 points per day, well within the top 20 of Team point production.
I used to think my G4 iMac was speedy enough for day to day stuff.
Team members Onanum or ArtemisG3 or Otsep know about the current Big Iron, as well as the people over at the new forum.

Re: Output dropping
The Windows SMP client uses 100% of all 4 cores, the Intel Q6600 overclocks very easily above 3 Ghz. Mine is running at 3.42 Ghz and averaging 1% of a SMP work unit every 7-8 minutes , when left on or not being used for rendering it can crank out a work unit every 13 hours.
Much much much faster than the Athlon 64 and the G4 I was using to start back in September.

Re: Output dropping
Onanum's daily average is current over 1500 per day.
Mine is almost always over 500.

For a new PC running F@H, I'd consider a new ATi card and associated @H client. The recent 38xx series, esp. the HD 3870, have a great deal more shader/computational horsepower than the X1900 XT, and is currently only around $250. Expect prices to drop back to the $219 MSRP after the holidays when supplies increase.

Re: Output dropping
My output will be dropping a little for the next few weeks, as one of my machines - a Dull XPS tower at work has had it's processor burn out sometime overnight. It was sure to happen sooner or later as it was always very hot, Pentium D's are as energy efficient as a Hummer with square wheels.
Maybe Dell will give me something better under warranty, I'm hoping for a Core 2.

Re: Output dropping
The Pentium D's not really THAT bad. Probably just a fluke.
I've been Folding on my 2.8GHz Pentium D (Dell desktop) for at least two years straight (24/7), and in the last few weeks switched over to the SMP client (I had been running two single threaded clients). It's able to finish a work unit in about 2 days, and the deadlines are about 4 days.

I don't know if that's ever been posted but that's a good stat-tracking page.

Re: Output dropping
Thanks!
Boy I need some new hardware to Fold on. The new Penryn based Macbook Pros might fair better with it than the older 65nm models did, but I don't know...
