free photoshop analog?

Well, my dumbass father decided to upgrade the 4+ year old iMac to OS X 10.5 and now my ancient copy of photoshop is no longer supported cry .  I only really used it for its most basic functions like outlining images and pasting them over new ones, adding text, cropping/rotating, erasing or coloring spots, etc. so I'm wondering if there is a free, simple imaging editor that will allow me to do those basic functions since I don't need all of the crazy filters and other stuff photoshop provides.  I'm pretty sure even MS paint allows all of the stuff I use, so if there is a Mac equivalent, that would probably work.

cliffs: any good *free* image editors that give more functionality than preview or Microsoft Word?  Specifically the ability to outline an image segment and copy and paste it on another image.

Lots of them. If I were you I would go to macupdate.com and do some downloading and sample what is available.

Re: free photoshop analog?

fixed that, but you will still need to install X11 from the installation discs (at least with Tiger)

Thanks for clicking.

I installed Gimp via MacPorts after having written it off for a long time. I have to say I'm damn impressed. The only thing I don't like is that palettes are windows and require 2 clicks to do what you want to do. Other than that its damn nice for a free program.

We did a feature in our March issue on some opne-source alternatives to Photoshop, including GIMP, GIMPshop, and Seashore. It's not online yet, but the magazine should be on newsstands any day now. And the feature will be added to the website sooner or later.

Re: free photoshop analog?

i guess i could break the pattern by only posting quotations from old episodes of Perfect Strangers. But since we're here at maclife.com i might as well talk about the magazine...

Didn't that show go WAY downhill when Balki and Larry moved in to that big house with their girlfriends? I sure think so.

Re: free photoshop analog?

ok, well, i downloaded gimpshop and gimp, and both crash the second I try to do anything and TAKE forever to even start up.  I'm on a ~4 year old 1Ghz iMac (dome base and metallic arm model) with OSX 10.5.  I see 3 X11 icons open up in the dock, so is that whats causing it? are different versions of X11 conflicting or something? It seems like great software, but I don't know whats wrong.  I'm really pissed my dad made this unnecessary upgrade, he should have left it alone and bought a new computer.

Re: free photoshop analog?

Yet another X11 problem (oh when will the topic be sticked?)...

OK, I'll have a go...first, try starting X11 before starting GIMP/shop sand see if that works.  Do three versions of X11 still start up?  It sounds like you may still have an older version installed.  Try searching both your Applications and Utilities folder.

Was this a clean install of Leopard or an upgrade?  If so, it's possible you have an older version of X11 which is incompatible.  Try reinstalling the version that came with Leopard.  There should be instructions on adding it on the Leopard installation disk.

Thats all I can think of for now...other than make sure the version of GIMP/shop you downloaded is the latest one compatible with your computer/OS.  I have it running in Leopard (Intel though) and it works great.

Re: free photoshop analog?

I still have plenty of reservations about Gimp, its always been my opinion that after using it, paying for Photoshop suddenly doesn't seem so bad. Last year when I worked for a school district with absolutely no funds, I resorted to Gimp but found it cumbersome for even basic use. Your milage will vary.

http://www.pixelmator.com/  gives Photoshop elements a run for the money, but its still glitchy but the interface is much more refined. Its gotten better over time from what I've understood, I guess 1.1.3 kills a lot of the initial gripes of beachballing.
