Re: Store is down...(!?) [New MacBooks, MacBook Pros]
Only the MBP's have the multi touch and the LED lighting. Oh well. Might be able to find an old 2.4ghz MBP for cheap now

Introducing new MacBook and MacBook Pro models
Apple today introduced new models of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro models feature the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors (running at up to 2.6GHz with 6MB of shared L2 cache), larger hard drives (up to 300GB), and 2GB of memory standard in most models. They also include the latest NVIDIA graphics processors — with up to 512MB of video memory — and an innovative Multi-Touch trackpad, first introduced in MacBook Air.
The three new models of the MacBook feature faster processors and hard drives: sleek white 2.1 GHz and 2.4 GHz models with 120GB or 160GB 5400 rpm hard drives and a stunning black 2.4 GHz model with a massive 250GB 5400 rpm hard drive. The 2.4 GHz MacBook ships with 2GB of memory standard, expandable up to 4GB across the line.
Available immediately, the new MacBook and MacBook Pro models start at just $1,099 and $1,999, respectively. [Feb 26, 2008]

Also, did you guys notice that a remote is no longer included in the price, but it's an add-on now?
they give you something with one hand while taking something away with the other.
here's a new faster laptop, oh you want a modem with that, that's extra. and you wanted a remote, well that's extra too.
they did the same thing with the ipods.
Yep
Other changes known to have been made to the systems are subtle, but worth noting. Buyers of the 13.3-inch MacBook may be disappointed to learn that the new processors, while faster overall, represent a step backwards in terms of their onboard memory cache: the earlier 2GHz and 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processors carried 4MB of Level 2 cache, while the new models sport only 3MB each.

Yeah, I had spotted that. That's one of the reasons I'm still trying to decide whether to return my 2.2 model when it arrives (that, and the fact that they'd have to BTO the replacement which would add even more time to the wait).

I picked up a new 15.4" MacBook Pro today. I had been waiting patiently. This thing is amazing. I love it. The multitouch technology makes using a laptop mouse much easier.

I'll be getting one next week, the 15" 2.5GHz, as I've also been patiently waiting, too patiently, even though it's kind of obvious that the motherboard is actually on the cusp of being replaced for a more optimized one for the new 45nm chips, and one of the next upgrades will be a 1GHz FSB.

I know you have been waiting patiently but I would wait longer. But hey, if you need it you need it.

Re: Store is down...(!?) [New MacBooks, MacBook Pros]
The MB/MBP are constantly being upgraded. If everyone keeps saying "well, this upgrade is almost out," no one will buy a new Mac...ever. I can understand waiting for some things, but on the other hand, if you want a new one, get it.
That said, it's funny to think that when the FSB goes to 1 ghz, it will be ten time faster than mine.....haha.

Yeah, 8x faster was enough for me to pull the trigger.

Re: Store is down...(!?) [New MacBooks, MacBook Pros]
I read benchmarks where the new MBP when compared to the older ones show there is no significant improvements in performance.
Yes, I would wait if I could.
I'm just happy that my MBP 2.16GHz Core Duo 2 is still considered a fast machine well after a year of service. I hope I can get another solid 4 years out of it without it getting unbearably slow. Right now, my 4 1/2 year old 1GHz Albook plays downloaded Quicktime movies choppy as hell if played at full screen - not worth doing (or if two plus movies are loaded at once), Force Quit NEVER works, and therefore, I need to do a hard restart multiple times a day, etc, etc, etc. I do have the ram maxed at over 1 gig and I repair Permissions all the time (which takes 3xs as long when compared to my MBP). This may be a Leopard issue though?

The "new laptops are out" enthusiasm has officially lost all its wind in my mind, and I really think that since we are dealing with an identical computer on the outside and the biggest real user difference is multitouch and VRAM, I'm going to delay buying one unless something literally forces me to require it. Multitouch would be the only thing standing between me and getting the last revision for much less, performing just as well. This update really feels like an echo of the Rev. A MacBook Pro.
Is your old 'book running Leopard? As I've upgraded through the cats, I've noticed that repairing permissions always takes less and less time on the same computers. I don't know how you do it, to me that sounds like an unusable computer.

Re: Store is down...(!?) [New MacBooks, MacBook Pros]
^^^Yeah, I'd do a wipe and reinstall. There is no reason that it should be struggling that badly. For normal work, that's still a very usable machine.

Re: Store is down...(!?) [New MacBooks, MacBook Pros]
To clarify, this is my 1GHz PowerBook that gets the eternal spinning beachballs that will not give me the option to Force Quit requiring hard restarts many times per day, choppy play full screen low res Quicktime movies, etc. This occurs on my side as well as my kid's side of the Mac. Should I do a clean instal? I'v been waiting for DisWarrior to get off their lazy asses and post their free update (that's been ready for purchase for weeks now) for months now hoping it may be able to solve these issues.

Re: Store is down...(!?) [New MacBooks, MacBook Pros]
In my waiting for DiskWarrior, I'd use Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up to an external partition, then wipe it clean and reinstall and see how it acts. If It's still frigged, you can just clone back to your PB using another computer and target mode for your lappy, or if it's snappy, start installing everything fresh on the new install.
