Apple's Next big thing ???

I want to tell that I have enough of the "Future of Apple products" predictions.  I subscribe to Mac|Life to get informative articles, not some crystal ball prophecies.  The "Apple's Next Big Thing" was 10 pages + one cover... a waste of paper if you ask me.  Is there anyone who is interested in this kind of articles ?

I am not a 40 and older reader stuck in the past... I'm a creative Mac User who likes all things related to Apple, be it iPod, iPhone, Macs, iApps or Pro Apps.  I think that Mac|Life is trying to connect with a different public than MacAddict but I don't think it is succeeding very well right now.

I don't enjoy reading Mac|Life anymore and I probably won't subscribe anymore if the magazine don't change its tone and content.

This comment is meant to be constructive, because I really care about Mac|Life.  I was a big fan of MacAddict (I still have all issues fro #10 to the last one) and I don't find Mac|Life as interesting, informative and entertaining as it could be.

Thanks for reading!

Re: Apple's Next big thing ???

If MacAddict was connecting with you, and you "think that Mac|Life is trying to connect with a different public than MacAddict" because it doesn't work for you any more, then not only are you right, but it probably IS succeeding - at least in connecting with a different public. (e.g. not you.)

A magazine that tries to be all things to all people will, of course, have a little stuff in it that's useless to you. Some of the things you like will be useless to me. For example, I really don't give a crap about the iPhone, except inasmuch as some of the multitouch technology might end up on a laptop. I had an iPod... I haven't seen it for a while, though, and I don't really miss it.

But the computers? Rrrowwwwrrrr.

It all comes down to signal:noise ratio.

Re: Apple's Next big thing ???

You are right, the mag is not connecting with me anymore...

But my main point is :  is there anyone who likes to read predictions on "Apple's Next Big Thing" (Squidget, iEye, iProtection, iCar, and future Apple packaging ???).  I'm sure that 99 % of people will find that it's 100 % pure paper waste.  I did'nt find it informative... and certainly not funny.  I read it and thought : "What a waste of time!".

The article on Leopard was okay in the last issue, but not very different from what I can read in MacWorld.

It is just sad that I don't enjoy what used to be my favorite mag... and I'm trying to let the Mac|Life staff that I don't like the general direction the mag is taking.

Because I care enough to take the time to let them know.

Re: Apple's Next big thing ???

Personally, I thought that the article would be better served as an online posting in the editor's blog than a for-print piece in the mag. I skimmed it and did not feel very much like reading it. Give me some concrete, meat-and-potatoes Mac content - not some magical mystery tour of Macdom-to-possibly-be.

When I was a kid, I loved that kind of stuff. Since I've always been kind of weird, I don't know what that means.

Re: Apple's Next big thing ???

I didn't find a single interesting article in the january issue. I remember the days I would read macaddict cover to cover, and for the most part I was educated and entertained. ml has completely failed to entertain/educate me it has gotten to a point that the mag goes from the mail to the recycle bin with nary a glance at the content.

The same is true of all the magazines I used to subscribe to. I think I just hate reading now.

At least it's good to know that I am not alone... I still hope the mag change before the end of my subscription.

Re: Apple's Next big thing ???

Jon Phillips here. I'm the magazine's editorial director, and the guy who wrote the "Next Big Thing" article that's being discussed. FWIW, the January issue is shaping up to be the best-selling issue of all time (best selling ever for both MacAddict and Mac|Life). And Mac|Life's newsstand sales have essentially been 50-100 percent better than MacAddict's. So, while I appreciate all feedback, both positive and negative, I thought it might be relevant to share that info. I am not trying to rub these numbers in anyone's face to the effect of "we're right and you're wrong." But I think it's important to state for the public record that many, many people clearly do find some kind of value in the January cover story.

THAT SAID: It is very important to us that we serve the loyal readers who have been with the magazine for years and years. To this end:

If anyone has any story ideas that we should address, please let me know. And if anyone has very specific suggestions on how the magazine might better serve the readership, please let me know

my email address is jphillips@futureus.com.

Thanks

Re: Apple's Next big thing ???

I don't subscribe anymore. I used too, but now I can only afford to pick up an issue or two. Such is college life. I will say that I never liked the "future of apple/mac" articles at the time of their publishing. What I did enjoy was saving them and going back after a year or three to see what did and did not come to pass.

In short, I did enjoy those "future" articles. It just takes a while to appreciate them.
