Question will new Mac Nvidia8600GT 512 MMX work in my 24" Intel iMac?
Yes I know that there is no market to buy direct. However my 7600GT card is going bad-when I play games on XP or Mac it freezes after a half hour of play. So, taking for granted that I would be successful in bitching and moaning to Apple that my card went bad from Christmas of 07, and that I would pay the extra money, do any of you VCard experts know if the MMX pins are the same from the 7600GT? It would sure be sweet to have a better card. Thanks for your help. PS have the White Rev 1 24" iMac.

Probably not.

I was under the impression that some of them are daughtercards; but the likelyhood of Apple using the same connector and form factor - not to mention the likelyhood of them replacing your 7600 with a newer model card, even if you paid them - is very, very minimal.

The 24" iMac is not soldered in it is unpluggable and MMX compatible

So I'm just saying if Apple needs to do the work anyway-would the 8600 fit?

But you'd have to ask Apple to be 100% sure. I'm guessing no because the white iMacs are a good bit thicker than the newer aluminum ones, so the card is quite likely made to different physical specifications. (Size, heat sink height, etc.)

If practical, you might try checking to see if the fan is still working, if the card isn't passively cooled by design. Silent fan failure often results in that kind of behavior.

Actually, if they are daughtercards, I'd bet money they use a standard slot like mini PCIe, as using standard technologies and ports has been standard practice for Apple since the move to Intel.
